The Mazda CX-70 Sacrifices Kid Seats for Cargo Space
Every time we turn around there’s a new Mazda SUV to drool over. We’ve seen the Mazda CX-90 and enjoyed its third row, and expected the new Mazda CX-70 to be smaller. But to our surprise, the 2025 Mazda CX-70 isn’t any smaller and forces an ultimatum.
Is the 2025 Mazda CX-70 bigger than the Mazda CX-90?
The 2025 Mazda CX-70 isn’t bigger than the Mazda CX-90. In fact, these SUVs are both about 200 inches long, 85 inches tall, and 78 inches wide. They’re nearly identical in size and shape, but the CX-70 has more cargo space.
This is because the Maza CX-90 has a third row for extra kids to enjoy. But in the CX-70 the extra seats have been removed so you can carry more stuff. So deciding between these models comes down to whether you want to transport more people or gear.
The official cargo specs of the CX-70 haven’t been revealed, but rumors suggest that it could have up to 40 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second row and about 75 cubes with the second row folded down.
With the CX-90, you get 15.9 cubic feet of cargo space behind the third row, 40 cubes with the third row folded down, and up to 75.2 cubes overall.
But the CX-70 also maximizes space by providing extra cubby places, more cargo hooks, and a built-in trunk on the load floor. It’s unclear if the CX-70 offers more passenger space than the CX-90, but hopefully, more information will be released soon.
Mazda also hasn’t shared how much power the CX-70 has, but it borrows the hybrid and PHEV powertrains from the CX-90.
The CX-90 has a standard turbocharged 3.3-liter inline-six engine with 280 hp and 332 lb-ft of torque. The 3.3 Turbo S engine is paired with a 48-volt hybrid system to generate 340 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque.
The CX-90 PHEV pairs a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with an electric motor and a battery pack to provide 323 hp and 36 lb-ft of torque.
These figures could be different in the CX-70 due to different engine tunes and the reduced weight without a third-row seat.
