North American Electric Vehicles in Canada is making the wait for a Tesla Cybertruck or GMC Hummer futile. That’s because, instead, you can get it to build you a Tesla-powered Humvee. Admit it, you always loved the brawniness of the Humvee but hated its rep as a marauding gas hog. Now you no longer need to beat yourself up over such conflicting ideals.

North American in Oliver, British Columbia, takes the reliably engineered Tesla electric powertrain and bonks it into a Humvee pickup. The H1EV conversion starts with Tesla’s dual motor setup from a Model S. That means 600 hp. Keep in mind that both the gas- and diesel-powered Humvees came with only 190 hp.

What is the range of these Humvee EVs?

The conversion has a 150-mile range. That’s not great, but not bad considering the size and weight. And if you want more range, for an extra $20,000, North American will add Tesla battery modules to give you 300 miles of range.

A Level 2 charge system is part of the package, as is a GPS speedometer and iPad display. Black vinyl inside, a black canvas top, four-wheel drive, and 37-inch tires on 20-inch rims are some other features. A leather interior is optional.

What’s so great about a Humvee, anyway?

AM General has built hundreds of thousands of Humvees over the years. And it has a legendary service record, having been in everything from the Invasion of Panama and the Persian Gulf War to use in the Somali Civil War and the current Ukraine invasion.

Should you want to purchase your own H1EV, NAEV says there is a wait time. That’s because it needs to procure an appropriate used Humvee, as well as the needed Tesla Model S components. These are not conversions only. NAEV does a ground-up restoration, including paint and upholstery. It says, “Each and every vehicle that leaves the shop must be 100 points and magazine ready.”

How much is the Humvee EV?

All chrome, painted, or powder-coated parts are stripped and restored to like-new condition. Any rust or structural issues are fixed before bodywork and paint begin. Once completed, each vehicle undergoes a minimum of 300 miles of testing. This also takes in all of the programming necessary.

For its Humvee H1EV builds, prices start at $100,000. With the amount of options possible, that price can and probably will increase. But keep in mind a GMC Hummer is well north of that figure, while all we know about the Tesla Cybertruck is that it will be at least $60,000. But probably much more once production ever begins. That, too, is a big question mark. And neither will be unique for long once production really starts cranking.
