The 2022 Ford Maverick is the smallest Ford pickup truck built in recent years. The tiny pickup has incredible gas mileage thanks to its standard hybrid powertrain. The Maverick is attracting plenty of new consumers to the truck vehicle segment. It looks like a pickup, but the real question is, can the Maverick pull a trailer?

Can the Ford Maverick pull a trailer?

The 2022 Ford Maverick is a small vehicle, so naturally, it doesn’t tow as much as the average pickup truck. The Maverick isn’t designed to be a workhorse, but it’s still built “Ford Tough.” The Maverick wouldn’t be much help at a worksite, but that doesn’t mean it’s completely useless when it comes to towing. The Blue Oval also offers special configurations for consumers who want a Maverick that can really tow.

The Ford Maverick has a measly 2,000-pound standard towing capacity. That’s 1,000 pounds less than the Ranger’s towing capacity. Luckily Ford offers a towing package for the small pickup truck. The Maverick’s 4K towing package allows the small truck to tow 4,000 pounds. The catch is that the Maverick must be equipped with the 2.0-liter four-cylinder EcoBoost gas engine and all-wheel drive to be compatible with the tow package.

The trade-off is that either consumers go for the Maverick with incredible fuel economy or opt for the version that tows more than double what the standard hybrid option can tow. The Ford Maverick will be able to pull some small trailers, but even with the 4K tow package, it won’t be able to pull larger trailers. That being said, how many consumers are actually buying the Maverick for its towing capacity in the first place?

The Ford Maverick is a city truck

If there ever was a truck built to thrive in the city, it’s the Ford Maverick. According to Car and Driver, the Ford Maverick standard hybrid achieves a whopping 42 miles per gallon in the city and 33 miles per gallon on the highway. If the Maverick’s fuel economy isn’t enough to make you believe this thing is built for the city, consider how its size makes it easier to squeeze into tight parking spots. The Ford Ranger is nearly a foot longer than the Maverick.

This tiny truck also features a fully customizable truck bed called the Flexbed. This bed was designed to get the most out of its size by adding pre-threaded holes and slots for custom setups. The Maverick isn’t made to thrive in the country, and its full potential has little to do with towing.

The Ford Maverick is the perfect pickup truck for folks who never thought of buying a truck before. It’s practically a sedan alternative. The tiny truck’s price and size make it attractive for drivers living in big cities. A large percentage of its pre-orders went to big cities in California like LA and San Francisco.

If you want the typical truck experience, the Maverick probably isn’t for you. If you prioritize gas mileage over towing capacity, Ford’s tiny truck has plenty to offer, with a starting price of under $20,000 before taxes and fees.
