While the competition between trucks is getting too spicy for the pepper due to the Ford Maverick, the Toyota Tacoma isn’t sweating it. Some critics say the 2022 Ford Maverick will bring the heat against the 2022 Toyota Tacoma, but it might not even be in the same kitchen.

We will admit that the 2022 Ford Maverick is an excellent new contender. It will take out a few rivals. However, we aren’t sure if it will catch up to the unmatched success of the 2022 Toyota Tacoma

According to Torque News, the Maverick is starting to outsell competitors. It moved 19,245 units in the first quarter of 2022. The Honda Ridgeline has 9,189 models delivered, and the Nissan Frontier delivered 22,405 units.

The Maverick is the third most popular option when mixed into the mid-size bunch. However, it’s not coming close to the Toyota Tacoma, which had 53,182 units delivered.

Plus, the ordering books for the 2022 Maverick are closed, while you can still get a 2023 Tacoma. The Maverick might gain traction when the 2023 order books open in August, but we might see the new 2023 Tacoma by then.

Does the Tacoma or Maverick have more power?

The 2022 Toyota Tacoma comes with a standard 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine with 159 hp and 180 lb-ft of torque. You can upgrade to the 3.5-liter V6 engine for 278 hp and 265 lb-ft of torque.

When properly equipped, the Tacoma can tow up to 6,800 lbs and carry a payload of up to 1,685 lbs. Also, the Tacoma can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in about 7.7 seconds.

The standard 2022 Ford Maverick engine is a 2.5-liter four-cylinder option that’s paired with an electric motor to churn out 191 hp. The 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine pumps out 250 hp and 277 lb-ft of torque.

You can only equip the gas-powered engine with the towing package and all-wheel drive. So, that feels limiting, but the 2023 Maverick may address this issue. The Maverick can tow up to 4,000 lbs and carry a payload of up to 1,564 lbs.

The Maverick can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in about 6.4 seconds. It has a unibody design, so it handles more like an SUV. But based on driving both options, it doesn’t feel sportier than the Tacoma.

Does the Tacoma or Maverick have better features?

It’s hard to beat the 2022 Ford Maverick’s start price of about $19,995. The 2022 Toyota Tacoma beings at around $26,700, creating a sizable difference. However, the Maverick is currently selling for about $5,368 over MSRP on average.

Both the Tacoma and Maverick have basic interiors that are comfortable and durable. Both options have a small rear seat as well. But the MAverick has innovative storage cubbies to make the most out of its space.

The standard infotainment system in the Tacoma is a 7.0-inch touchscreen, but you can upgrade to an 8.0-inch unit. The Maverick has a standard 8.0-inch unit. Both come with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

While the Maverick and Tacoma are great trucks to consider, the Tacoma offers more off-roading capabilities, strength, and one epic resale value. The Maverick could catch up soon with its low price.
