Have you ever known Ford to sit back and allow another automaker to outdo them? We haven’t, either. The 2023 Super Duty pickup truck takes a page out of the Ram HD playbook by adding a high-output version of the Power Stroke diesel engine. How does the increased power change things for this new Ford truck?

How much power can the new 2023 Super Duty Ford truck offer?

At its most powerful, the 2023 Super Duty brings 500 horsepower and 1,200 lb-ft of torque. This represents the most power in any of the heavy-duty trucks in the one-ton and three-quarter-ton classes. This power output comes from the massive 6.7-liter Power Stroke turbocharged diesel V8 engine.

This new high-output diesel engine sits at the top of the range, with three lower-powered options for the Ford Super Duty. The standard Power Stroke arrangement delivers 475 horsepower and 1,050 lb-ft of torque, which is still impressively strong. Below that we see a 7.3-liter V8 tuned to 430 horsepower and 485 lb-ft of torque along with a 6.8-liter V8 rated at 405 horsepower and 445 lb-ft of torque.

All engines of this new Ford truck utilize a 10-speed automatic transmission set up in either RWD or 4WD.

Ford has a long history of building the strongest and toughest trucks available. The Ford Super Duty has come in three sizes for years. These sizes are F-250, F-350, and F-450. When the 2023 Ford F-450 Super Duty is equipped with a gooseneck trailer and a high-output Power Stroke engine, it can tow up to 40,000 pounds. This is the first truck in the class to reach this tow rating.

The F-350, with the high-output Power Stroke diesel engine and gooseneck hitch, now reached 38,000 pounds of towing. When equipped with a conventional hitch, the new Ford F-350 truck can tow up to 30,000 pounds.

Yes, the 2023 Ford F-350 Super Duty can carry up to 8,000 pounds in the bed. This figure is much higher than the 4,713 pounds from the 2022 model year.

To achieve this higher payload rating, the 2023 Super Duty must be configured as the F-350 XL with RWD, dual rear wheels, regular cab, High-Output Power Stroke diesel engine, and the Heavy-Duty Payload Package.

In addition to the added strength to tow up to 40,000 pounds and carry as much as 8,000 pounds, the new Ford Super Duty includes several tech features that make towing and hauling much easier. Some of these include a Trailer Navigation function, a built-in generator, and Onboard Scales.

J.D. Power highlights other upgrades for this new Ford truck including enhanced technology with a suite of cloud-based services while also being the first truck to come with embedded 5G technology.

Some of the appearance packages offered for the F-150 make it up to the heavy-duty truck market to be available in the Ford Super Duty. Some of these include the STX, Sport, and Black packages that offer specialized styling and graphics and a new XL Off-Road package. The new XL Off-Road package includes:

  • 33-inch off-road tires
  • A raised air dam
  • Skid plates
  • An electronic-locking rear differential
  • Special water-fording axle tubes

The new 2023 Super Duty is the strongest truck in its class. It pushes the line farther away from the competition. The Power Stroke-equipped Ford Super Duty was already the strongest truck in the market, and now it packs a bigger punch.
