Although the Ford F-150 Lightning was recently released, it looks like the Blue Oval is planning another electric truck. This EV truck was announced back in April of 2022, and we have been learning more about it. Where the F-150 Lightning is pretty much a regular F-150 with an electric powertrain, this “Project T3” will be an all-new truck. Making it sound like something specifically designed to be battery-powered.

Is Ford replacing the F-150 Lightning?

The F-150 Lightning truck is a bit of a compromise, and it might be replaced soon. Ford CEO Jim Farley has confirmed some more details about what this EV is going to be. And as many automotive brands do, he promised the new pickup will “revolutionize America’s truck.”

Now, rival company Ram promised something similar with the Ram 1500 REV, and that truck seems a little too tame to revolutionize the industry. So, it will be interesting to see how the Blue Oval moves forward with the development, marketing, and production of Project T3.

Project T3 will likely replace the Lightning and expand the brand’s lineup of electric trucks. The Ford F-150 Lightning was introduced in order to get something on the market. And clearly, the Blue Oval wants to make something that is a little more dedicated to being electric.

A new electric Ford truck is coming

According to MotorTrend, the 2025 model year might bring a new electric truck or trucks. A new facility is expected to go online at some point in 2025, but as far as the pickup itself, we don’t know much. The Blue Oval is being fairly secretive when it comes to this project.

At the new facility, Ford has confirmed that up to 500,000 trucks could be built annually. And that number could certainly help this brand keep up with demand. If you’ve been hoping to get an F-150 Lightning, you’ve likely noticed that you can’t really show up to a dealership and just buy one.

Demand for this electric truck has been so high that Ford has been forced to close orders for the F-150 Lightning for the current model year.

Is Ford better than Tesla?

During the production launch of the 2023 Ford F-150 Lightning, Farley made some digs at what might be the most well-known EV company. In reference to the Tesla Cybertruck, which has experienced many delays, Farley stated that the Blue Oval’s truck would cost less than other electric trucks “whenever they go on sale.”

The end goal for Farley is to make Ford the number one electric pickup truck maker. And with the success of the F-Series, Ranger, and even now the Maverick truck, that does seem like it could be possible. Outside of the aging Ranger, Ford’s trucks are usually top sellers in their respective segments.

We might not know much about Project T3 yet, but it is clear that the Blue Oval is taking this development seriously. And I will be keeping my eye out as news breaks, and more information becomes available.
