Chevrolet is one of the most well-known American automakers, and it competes with its Detroit rivals in practically every segment of the car market. Ford and Stellantis do well in some segments, but in one segment in particular, they’re simply dropping the ball compared the what Chevy’s been doing. Here’s a look at the subcompact crossover SUV segment and how Chevy is doing exceptionally well while Ford and Stellantis are not.

Here’s how Chevy is doing in the subcompact crossover SUV segment

GM Authority wrote about the sales numbers of the subcompact crossover segment for the first quarter of the year, and overall, it’s good news for both Chevy and its parent company, General Motors. Chevy has two subcompact crossovers on the market right now, while Buick, which is also owned by GM, has another two. All four GM models saw a growth in sales year-over-year.

One of the best-selling options in the segment right now is the Chevy Trailblazer. In the first quarter of the year, it sold nearly 28,000 units. That’s a nearly 225% increase from last year, and that’s the largest year-over-year growth in sales in the entire segment. Those numbers makes the Trailblazer the second best-selling subcompact SUV. Only the Subaru Crosstrek sold better in the first quarter of the year.

The other Chevy option in the segment is selling much worse, but it’s still pulling solid numbers. The Trax sold almost 6,500 units in the first quarter of the year. That’s an 11% increase from last year.

Those numbers aren’t very good since most options in the segment have sold more than that. However, the segment as a whole only grew by 6.4% compared to last year. As such, the Trax’s sales numbers are growing faster than average.

Ford and Stellantis are dropping the ball compared to Chevy

Stellantis is the only real competition that Chevy has from its Detroit rivals when it comes to the subcompact crossover segment. However, Stellantis’ options have not been doing well. Jeep is owned by Stellantis, and it has two options in the segment. The Compass sold just over 23,000 units in the first quarter, which made it the fourth best-selling option in the segment.

That number represents a nearly 5% drop in sales compared to last year. The other Jeep in the segment is doing even worse. That option is the Renegade, and it sold just over 4,000 units in the first quarter. That makes it the fifth worst-selling option. On top of that, that number is a nearly 59% decline from last year.

There are two other subcompact SUVs from Ford and Stellantis that are being sold, but they’ve both been discontinued. The Ford EcoSport was the company’s only subcompact crossover option, and it was killed off last year.

So far this year, Ford has sold 1,600 units of the discontinued SUV. The Fiat 500X was also discontinued last year. It has the worst sales numbers right now, as Fiat only moved 135 units in the first quarter.

Chevy’s subcompact crossover SUVs are competitive with the giants of the segment

Since Ford doesn’t even have a subcompact SUV offering, and Stellantis’ only options are Jeeps, it’s not surprising that Chevy’s offerings are doing very well. In fact, Chevy’s subcompact offerings are doing so well that they’re primarily competing with the Asian automakers who dominate the segment.

Hyundai and Kia are both very competitive in the segment, and their five subcompact SUV models combined for 68,500 units sold in the first quarter. That’s double what Chevy’s two options combined to sell, but individually, the Trailblazer and Trax are doing well. For instance, the Trailblazer is easily outselling Hyundai’s best-selling subcompact SUV, the Kona.
