Sales data can tell you a lot about a vehicle. This data can often help you make informed decisions as a consumer and choose specific vehicles to focus on during your search for a new or used vehicle. Last month’s fastest-selling ‘car’ wasn’t a car at all. Furthermore, the fastest-selling car was a hybrid. Why is this hybrid SUV, the Toyota Grand Highlander Hybrid, selling so well?

Toyota is familiar with being the best in sales categories. The RAV4 is one of the best-selling SUVs ever made. That being said, it isn’t the fastest-selling vehicle at the moment. Neither is the current most popular vehicle on the market, the Tesla Model Y.

As of August, the fastest-selling car on the market is the 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander Hybrid. Which is surprising for a number of reasons. Firstly, the Grand Highlander Hybrid isn’t cheap compared to smaller alternatives. Additionally, hybrid and electric models aren’t typically as popular as internal combustion engine ones.

The year 2023 has seen plenty of firsts, including the Model Y outselling the gas-powered RAV4. Now, it seems the Grand Highlander Hybrid nameplate has a chance to make history as well. Part of the reason why it’s selling so quickly is the novelty of the new vehicle. Consumers have also decided that the midsize three-row hybrid SUV should provide great value over time.

Toyota’s Grand Highlander Hybrid is pricey compared to many midsize-three row SUVs but boasts impressive specs. It’s powerful and has great fuel efficiency for such a large SUV, thanks to its hybrid powertrain system. Aside from its specs, the fastest-selling car also comes with a long list of standard features.

Toyota Grand Highlander Hybrid standard features

  • Wireless smartphone charging
  • SofTex-trimmed seats
  • Heated front seats
  • Digital key capability
  • Heated mirrors with blind-spot warning indicators

The midsize three-row hybrid SUV is equipped with creature comforts and tech that improve its overall driving and ownership experience. It comes in two configurations, as does the Hybrid MAX. Upper trim levels are more luxurious and include better safety and driver assistance features. Between the base Grand Highlander Hybrid XLE’s specs and standard features, it has a solid value proposition as a family SUV.

What is the best midsize three-row SUV?

It’s no coincidence that the Grand Highlander Hybrid is getting plenty of attention in the third quarter of 2023. There has been plenty of attention on midsize three-row SUVs in the last few years, thanks to models like the Kia Telluride and Hyundai Palisade.

The Telluride has been the undisputed king of its unique niche since it hit the scene in 2020. Now, the arrival of the Grand Highlander and Grand Highlander Hybrid poses a serious threat to the South Korean SUV’s sales and popularity.

In terms of value for the money, the new Grand Highlander Hybrid is arguably the best in its segment because of its value proposition, predicted long-term reliability, and amazing fuel economy. There’s still plenty of time for the two midsize models to duke it out, but consumers clearly have their eyes on the exciting new Toyota.
