If you want one of the safest pickup trucks you can buy, you can start by looking at the Top Safety Pick and Top Safety Pick+ awards. These are put out by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). They can be a great pace to start your search. These are the midsize pickup trucks that are safe enough to make the list of the best pickup trucks in 2022.

The 2022 Toyota Tundra is #1 of the safest midsize pickup trucks

Of all the pickup trucks rated by the IIHS, only the 2022 Toyota Tundra earns the title of Top Safety Pick+. That’s the highest award that a vehicle can earn, given only to tricks that meet the strictest qualifications.

To win the coveted Top Safety Pick+ award, a vehicle must have good crash test ratings in all major categories. It also has to have superior or advanced safety systems and acceptable or good headlights standard on all models.

The 2022 Ford F-150 is a large pickup truck with an important safety award

While the 2022 Ford F-150 doesn’t hold the coveted title of Top Safety Pick+, it is a Top Safety Pick, which makes it a top choice. The 2022 Ford F-150 extended cab also wins a Top Safety Pick award.

An IIHS Top Safety Pick+ award is important because it helps consumers choose the safest SUVs. By testing vehicles and sharing the results, the IIHS allows consumers to be more aware of potential issues with their vehicles, and car manufacturers have more accountability.

The 2022 Ram 1500 is a Top Safety Pick winner

Finally, the 2022 Ram 1500 is a Top Safety Pick winner. Although a vehicle winning the Top Safety Pick or Top Safety Pick+ award is obviously a positive when you’re car shopping, not all vehicles with these awards are equal. The IIHS says, “These awards identify the best vehicle choices for safety within size categories during a given year. Larger, heavier vehicles generally afford more protection than smaller, lighter ones. Thus, a small car that qualifies for an award might not protect its occupants as well as a bigger vehicle that doesn’t earn the award.”

If you’re in the market for the safest pickup trucks on the market, any of the trucks on the IIHS list of Top Safety Pick and Top Safety Pick+ winners would be an excellent choice. They each have what it takes to be considered the safest choices, and that’s according to the strict standards of the IIHS.
