The Toyota Supra has lived through five generations, but many fans hold the Mk3 Supra in the highest regard. That model finally broke away from its roots as a Toyota Celica to grow into its own persona as a rear-wheel-drive sports car.

If you’d like to own one of these iconic vehicles, you’ll be pleased to know they’re vastly more affordable than a new Toyota Supra.

Today’s average price range of the Toyota Mk3 Supra

The third-generation Toyota Supra, also known as the A70, was available in three configurations.

The base model Mk3 is powered by a 7M-GE dual-overhead cam inline-six engine capable of 200 horsepower and 196 lb-ft of torque. The inline-six was paired with a choice of a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic gearbox, plus rear-wheel-drive. It was also the first Supra to have an electronically controlled suspension.

These versions are typically worth about $16,000 on the used market, provided they’re in good condition.

The A70 Turbo models received the upgraded 7M-GTE engine with a turbocharger, boosting power output to 232 hp and 254 lb-ft of torque. MotorTrend tested this engine and determined that it gives the Mk3 Supra a 0-60 time of 6.9 seconds. A convertible body style was offered alongside the coupe, and the same gearbox options from the previous A70 were carried over.

Classic lists the value of this model at $23,849.

The Turbo R model is currently valued at $18,022. It has the 1JZ-GTE twin-turbo engine under its hood, which generates 276 hp and 268 lb-ft of torque. Additionally, it has a Bilstein sport suspension and a Torsen differential for heightened athleticism.

This model was exclusive to the Japanese market and was only produced for the 1990-92 model years. Since the Supra Turbo R is over 25 years old, you can import one to the U.S. if needed. 

How much does a 2024 Toyota Supra cost?

After the Toyota Supra A70 was phased out, the Toyota Supra A80 was available in the U.S. for just five model years. Despite having the 2JZ-GTE engine, which can potentially make 700-1,000 hp with aftermarket tuning, the A80 wasn’t very successful.

The Toyota Supra would disappear for 22 years before the debut of the Mk5.

The 2024 Toyota Supra has a minimum asking price of $45,540. That price includes a 255-hp turbo-four engine, and the 3.0 models have a standard 382-hp turbo-inline-six. The Supra 3.0 starts at $54,500. RWD is still your only drivetrain option for this sports car, regardless of which trim you prefer

The biggest differences between these two Toyota Supra models

Manual transmissions were almost considered essential in the Mk3’s heyday, but you can only find those on two fifth-gen Toyota Supra models. For the 2023 model year, Toyota introduced a six-speed manual gearbox as an optional partner to the turbo-six. The standard is an eight-speed automatic transmission, which yields better straight-line acceleration.

According to Car and Driver, both models with the inline-six still boast a sub-four-second 0-60-mph time.

The Toyota Supra 3.0 also has the most racing equipment upgrades compared to the Mk3 Turbo R. Each 3.0 model has front Brembo brakes and an active rear differential, which boasts a full range of locking ratios. These models also come with adaptive suspension dampening, while the Premium versions have cast-iron rear brakes. 

A modern Toyota Supra also has warning functions for both lane departure and approaching obstacles. While it does have an optional center touchscreen, the base model keeps things more driver-focused with a simple display. 

With its stock engine options, a Toyota Mk3 Supra is slower and slightly heavier than the latest model. However, this particular car’s innovations paved the way for the success of the version that’s widely available today.

It’s worth having for its history alone, and a little extra tuning could make yours as powerful as the modern-day Supra.
