It’s user-friendly controls and intuitive infotainment system make accessing various features effortless. Read more about what the 4Runner’s interior has to offer.

How is the 2023 Toyota 4Runner interior?

The Toyota 4Runner interior is comfortable, as you might expect. Since Toyota uses body-on-frame construction, the SUV is sturdy on and off the road. There are a lot of variations throughout the trim lineup of the 4Runner, so each one has different options available. For instance, the base SR5 gets fabric-trimmed seats and an eight-way power-adjustable driver’s seat.

The 40/20/40 split seats recline and fold flat in the second row for added storage. A third row is available but isn’t standard on any trims. The higher trim levels get Toyota’s SofTex trimmed seats with various split options; this is also available on a few of the trims. Toyota offers perforated leather-trimmed seats as well.

Even though the 4Runner interior is attractive, it gets many complaints about its outdated design. Toyota has made minor updates throughout the fifth generation, but the SUV hasn’t received a significant update since 2009.

The Toyota 4Runner interior still has a lot of technology, but it isn’t the most modern or up-to-date. The SR5 base trim has an eight-inch touchscreen and eight speakers throughout the cabin. It is compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and has plenty of USB ports. Toyota uses actual buttons and knobs for systems like air conditioning and volume.

A digital gauge cluster shows the speedometer, tachometer, coolant temperature, and fuel gauges. It is straightforward and easy to read but looks more simple than it does with updated technology. The 4Runner has 89.7 cubic feet of space behind the front rows and 47.2 cubic feet behind the second row.

One area that the Toyota 4Runner interior excels is with safety systems and airbags throughout the cabin. This year, the 4Runner gets Toyota Safety Sense 2.5, which adds Lane Departure Alert, Automatic High Beams, and Dynamic Radar Cruise Control. Blind Spot Monitor and Rear Cross-Traffic Alert are also included.

There are eight airbags throughout the cabin for the driver and front passengers, and all rows have airbags. Roll-sensing side curtain airbags will also automatically deploy. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave the 2023 4Runner good scores on most crashworthiness tests. This year, it wasn’t enough to earn a Top Safety Pick award after the IIHS updated its testing to make vehicles safer.

The Toyota 4Runner interior will receive a major update whenever the sixth generation starts, but it is good enough for now. The 4Runner has a big following for its reliability and capability, none of which are impacted by a dated interior.
