Alaska Is Among the Worst States for EV Chargers
There’s a massive push for mainstream automakers to pursue electrification. In fact, most companies have hard dates in mind of when they will be mostly or all-electric. This is even evident in upcoming EVs like the 2024 Dodge Charger. However, not all states are equal when it comes to infrastructure. In other words, states like Alaska have a relatively small number of EV chargers.
Here’s how Alaska and similar states measure up when it comes to EV ownership.
Alaska has the fewest EV Chargers in the country
Many people might be looking at the 2024 Dodge Charger announcement and considering the switch. Currently, about 4% of Americans are EV owners, but many more people are considering it. However, this may not be the best choice for people who live in Alaska. Sure, it’s not a wasteland for people who drive all-electric cars, but it’s one of the worst places in the country for alternative fuel sources.
According to ISeeCars, Alaska has the fewest EV chargers out of any state, with only 123. North Dakota follows with 208 chargers, and then South Dakota only has 237. Mississippi, Wyoming, and West Virginia also make the list. By comparison, California has the most, with 51,490, which means it would be a prime place to drive the ultra-powered 2024 Dodge Charger.
Alaska is not the worst state for EV ownership
Alaska might have the fewest EV chargers, but it’s not the worst place to own an all-electric car. According to the previously mentioned study, Mississippi is the worst to own a vehicle like the 2024 Dodge Charger. It has 419 chargers, but thanks to a relatively large population, this equates to 7,016 residents per charger.
Louisiana is actually the second worst state for EV ownership with its 702 chargers. However, this equals 6,515 Louisiana residents per charger. Alaska comes in third for the worst states in this regard. As mentioned, there are 123 chargers in the state. This means there are 5,963 residents per EV charger. Kentucky, Alabama, and West Virginia also make the list of the worst states for EV ownership.
However, Alaska does happen to be the state with the smallest amount of improvement for EV chargers. As of 2022, there were 6,060 residents per charger in the state, which only represents a 1.6% change. For comparison, states like Connecticut and Louisiana improved by over 30%.
The number of people driving all-electric cars will only increase thanks to options like the 2024 Dodge Charger. Infrastructure will continue to improve, but it’s going to take longer for places like Alaska. It’s also important to point out that the state has relatively few registered EV drivers.
