Chevy used to use the slogan “Heartbeat of America” to describe the hard-working nature of the Silverado pickup truck. These commercials featured Americans out in the fields, working hard to make a living with the Silverado by their side. This Chevy truck continues to be one of the top models in the half-ton truck class, leading us to the things to love about the Silverado.

1. The 2022 Chevy Silverado has four powerful engines

You can enjoy this truck with any of the four Chevrolet engines offered. These engines and power ratings are:

  • 2.7-liter turbocharged four-cylinder, 310 horsepower, 420 lb.-ft. of torque
  • 5.3-liter V8, 355 horsepower, 383 lb.-ft. of torque
  • 6.2-liter V8, 420 horsepower, 460 lb.-ft. of torque
  • 3.0-liter turbocharged Duramax diesel six-cylinder, 277 horsepower, 460 lb.-ft. of torque

2. You’ll find impressive towing and payload numbers in this truck

When equipped with the largest V8 engine, the Silverado pulls up to 13,300 pounds.  This version also carries as much as 2,280 pounds in the bed. To carry that much weight, you need the 6.2-liter V8 engine.

In addition to the power to handle the heavy load, the Chevy Silverado can include a multi-camera trailering system which gives you up to 15 different views. There’s even a camera to make your trailer disappear, which is pretty cool.

3. This is one of the best-handling trucks in the market

Some of the other trucks in the half-ton class can become difficult to maneuver in parking lots, causing you to park far from the store entrance. That’s not the case with this Chevy truck. The handling and steering feel great, giving you confidence and control on the roads and in every parking lot.

4. The gas mileage of the Chevy Silverado leads the way

You have to choose the Duramax diesel engine to achieve the best fuel mileage, but the numbers tell us you’ll enjoy 23 city/32 hwy mpg. The Ram 1500 EcoDiesel comes close at 22 city/32 hwy mpg, but the Silverado 1500 achieves top honors. Of course, this is only for a truck without a hybrid or electric powertrain.

5. You can get comfortable in this truck

When driving a truck, you’re not looking for a luxury experience on the road. You want a straightforward, comfortable, useful place where you can plop down after a hard day’s work and enjoy a comfortable ride home. The Chevy Silverado gives you that cabin.

6. Enjoy an excellent safety package in the Chevy Silverado

Higher trims add more to the mix of safety items you’ll find, but this truck offers you:

  • High-definition rearview camera
  • Automatic emergency braking
  • Teen Driver technology
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Blind-spot monitoring
  • Forward collision alert
  • Front pedestrian braking
  • Follow distance indicator
  • Lane keep assist
  • Lane departure warning
  • IntelliBeam headlights

As you can see, this is a complete package of safety items meant to keep you and your truck out of harm’s way.

Repair Pal gives the Silverado 1500 a 3.5/5 rating for reliability. This puts the Chevy truck in the above-average category and ranks it fifth out of 17 trucks. The number of issues for the Silverado is typically low.

Why are trucks called 1500?

The 1500 number tells us this is a half-ton truck. Ram uses the same numbering system as GM, with 1500, 2500, and 3500 indicating the three most common truck sizes. These sizes are half-ton, three-quarter-ton, and one-ton progressively. Ford uses a similar system by dropping one of the zeros to give us 150, 250, and 350.

What problems does the Chevy Silverado have?

If you were looking at a Silverado from the previous generation, you might run into a few issues with your truck. Some of these trouble spots reported by WVDOT are:

  • Transmission problems
  • Excessive oil consumption
  • Engine knocking
  • Cabin troubles
  • Selector switch failure
  • Issues with starting

Should you drive the 2022 Chevy Silverado?

If you want a tough truck that handles some of your biggest jobs, this Chevy truck is ready to get to work. When you need more towing and payload, the Ford F-150 has the Silverado beat. If you’re looking for a more luxurious cabin, the Ram 1500 is the best selection in the market.
