Toyota’s new and used cars have a reputation for sensibility and reliability. Moreover, four model years of two of the automaker’s popular sedans snagged top accolades for their value. The Toyota Avalon and Camry from 2022 and before are a couple of the most popular picks for the best used midsize and large sedans under $40,000.

Which is the best Toyota sedan car?

The Avalon, Camry, or diminutive Corolla could be the best option depending on what you want from a Toyota sedan. However, Consumer Reports ranked the best Toyota sedans under $40,000 here:

  • 2020, 2021 Toyota Avalon
  • 2019-2021 Toyota Avalon Hybrid
  • 2022 Toyota Camry
  • 2021 Toyota Camry

The 2020 and 2021 Avalon and Avalon Hybrid snagged the top spots. The large Toyota model has more cargo volume and higher reliability scores than a comparable Nissan Maxima. Also, with a dedicated hybrid model, the Avalon offers fuel economy that the Maxima, Dodge Charger, and Chrysler 300 can’t match. Moreover, Consumer Reports said the 2019-2021 Toyota Avalon Hybrid’s 42 mpg combined is a “commendable achievement for such a large car.”

In addition to the Avalon, the Camry earned top spots on the list of used cars under $40,000. According to Kelley Blue Book (KBB), the 2021 and 2022 Toyota Camry have a fair purchase price of around $24,924 and $26,649, respectively. Unsurprisingly, the Avalon models are a bit pricier. For instance, a 2021 Toyota Avalon XLE has a fair value of around $32,221.

Is Toyota discontinuing the Avalon?

Unfortunately for fans of the sedan model, Toyota is discontinuing the Avalon after the car’s 2022 model year. As a result, the 2022 and 2021 model years are a couple of solid used car options for bargain hunters.

The Japanese automaker will continue to produce the Corolla and Camry models. Also, while the Avalon Hybrid is also getting the ax, the other sedans offer hybrid trims with around 50 mpg combined. Moreover, the new Crown replaces the Avalon in the Toyota lineup. However, the 2023 Toyota Crown is a higher-riding four-door option with a taller roofline than the outgoing Avalon.

What is Toyota’s cheapest sedan?

The cheapest sedan in Toyota’s 2023 lineup is the Corolla, a compact car with seating for five and seven trims, including four hybrid applications. The entry-level LE starts at around $21,550.

According to TrueCar, it takes the top spot in the segment. Also, Consumer Reports awarded the 2020 model a top place on the list of the best small cars for $20,000 to $25,000. Each of Toyota’s used sedan options earned high praise in their categories.

Which Toyota sedan lasts the longest?

While the Toyota Camry gained accolades from Consumer Reports for its value, the Avalon has the potential to outlast it. According to iSeeCars’ lifespan study, an Avalon could last 245,710 miles or more.
