Hybrid and electric vehicle production has seen a meteoric rise over the past decade. But the Toyota Prius remains the OG of hybrid cars. So it’s no surprise the 2023 Toyota Prius recently earned Best Hybrid Car from U.S. News. The new Prius has four distinctive perks that helped it win the award in its category.

1. The 2023 Toyota Prius excels in fuel economy

The Toyota Prius is a bastion of fuel efficiency. U.S. News says no conventional hybrid outperforms the Prius’ excellent fuel economy. The base-model LE has an EPA-estimated fuel economy of 57 mpg combined — among the best in the industry.

And the 2023 Prius Prime plug-in hybrid boasts Predictive Efficient Drive with Predictive Deceleration support. This system helps the car optimize its range by learning the driver’s habits on the road. Once the system adapts to the driver’s routine, it assists in deceleration and engaging the regenerative braking system to recharge the battery.

2. The 2023 Toyota Prius packs plenty of value with many standard features

Apart from its stellar fuel economy, the 2023 Toyota Prius includes many standard features. Even the base-model Prius LE, starting at $27,450, has the Toyota Safety Sense suite of advanced driver-assistance systems, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration, and six USB-C charge ports. It also has push-button start with remote keyless entry, a cargo area cover, and more.

And the range-topping Prius Limited, with a $34,465 starting MSRP, brings numerous luxurious touches. They include a power liftback, a fixed glass roof, and 19-inch alloy wheels. Also standard in the Limited are rain-sensing variable intermittent windshield wipers, heated and ventilated front seats, and driver’s seat memory. Plus, it boasts a 12.3-inch multimedia touchscreen and an eight-speaker JBL premium audio system.

3. Upgraded performance makes the best hybrid even better

Performance enthusiasts might shrug at the Prius’ performance. But its increased horsepower, “light and accurate steering, and smooth ride” make it a capable daily driver, U.S. News reports.

Toyota replaced the wheezy, 121-hp 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine with a 2.0-liter harnessing 194 hp in the front-wheel-drive version.

The all-wheel-drive version got a boost to 196 hp. And though the 2023 Prius can reach 60 mph in under seven seconds, it’s more fuel-efficient than its predecessor.

4. The 2023 Toyota Prius says bye to dorky design and hi to sleek styling

The ugly duckling of hybrids has finally blossomed into a swan.

The most noticeable 2023 Toyota Prius upgrade brings the car into the modern era with a stunning makeover. Yes, the perenially practical hybrid got the glow-up it deserves.

Shedding its awkward wagon/hatchback looks, the new Prius now sports the sloping profile of a Tesla Model 3 and — dare we say — the sleek headlights of a Ferrari SF90.

With a captivating design, excellent fuel efficiency, and reliability that consumers have come to expect, the reborn 2023 Toyota Prius deserves its Best Hybrid Car award.
