The 2023 Subaru WRX GT is the top-of-the-line version of the powerful sedan. Compared to the lower WRX trims, the GT is loaded to the gills with a few fancy features. The most notable ones include an adaptive suspension, a performance transmission (CVT), Ultrasuede Recaro seats, and the brand’s EyeSight Driver-Assist technology system. However, all of these luxuries come at an added cost, which puts the WRX GT at a starting price of $43,395. That’s pretty steep for a car that starts at around $30,000 for the base trim. But if you don’t want to spend that much on a WRX, here are a few cheaper Subaru WRX GT alternatives:

  • 2023 Dodge Charger GT
  • 2023 Mazda3 Turbo
  • 2023 Audi A3
  • 2023 Hyundai Elantra N

The 2023 Dodge Charger GT provides all-wheel drive American muscle

The first Subaru WRX GT alternative we would recommend is the 2023 Dodge Charger GT. The Charger GT comes in an all-wheel drive configuration like the Subaru WRX GT but is powered by a V6 engine as opposed to a turbocharged flat-four. It comes with a lot of the same amenities, including dual-zone climate control, an Alpine six-speed audio system, and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto connectivity.

As for that V6 engine, it puts out 300 hp, which is slightly more than the WRX’s 271. The best part is that the Charger GT costs a little less, starting at $39,930 for the AWD model.

The 2023 Mazda3 2.5 Turbo offers a slightly more compact Subaru WRX GT alternative

The 2023 Mazda3 2.5 Turbo is the little powerhouse with its 250-hp SkyActiv engine. The 2.5-liter engine is turbocharged and comes solely with an automatic transmission and all-wheel drivetrain, just like the WRX GT. However, the Mazda3 Turbo is a little better appointed with its luxurious interior and upscale amenities.

During our time with the Mazda3 Turbo, we enjoyed its premium Bose sound system, leather seats, and spacious interior, which made it feel like it was from a class above. Did we mention that it’s cheaper? The top-trim Mazda3 2.5 Turbo Premium Plus starts at $34,000, which is much cheaper than the WRX GT.

Choose the 2023 Audi A3 for a European experience

If Japanese and American automobiles aren’t your thing, the 2023 Audi A3 can give you a unique experience. The A3 is the German brand’s entry-level compact sedan, which provides drivers with an engaging driving experience thanks to a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine and AWD. With 200 hp, the A3 may not be as powerful as the WRX, but it’s just as classy.

Inside, you’ll find a premium leather interior, a 10-inch touchscreen infotainment system, and Apple Carplay/Android Auto connectivity. Not to mention that the A3 is built with the type of precision and premium quality you would expect from Audi. All that and it only costs $35,400.

The 2023 Hyundai Elantra N may not be as nice, but it’s just as spunky

One wildcard recommendation we would like to offer is the 2023 Hyundai Elantra N. We call it a “wildcard” because the Elantra N isn’t the first car you may consider when searching for a sporty compact, but it’s worth a look. Under its hood is a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine that pumps out 276 hp and 289 lb-ft of torque and can get up to 31 mpg.

It’s just as powerful as the WRX GT and has similar interior features, including leather and Alcantara-trimmed seats, a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system, and a Bose premium sound system. All things considered, the Elantra N is a worthy alternative, especially since it costs over $10,000 less than the WRX GT.

These alternatives could sway you from the 2023 Subaru WRX GT

Although the 2023 Subaru WRX GT is undoubtedly a strong performance sedan, it’s not your only choice at the $43,000 mark. In fact, some buyers may think that that price is too expensive. However, these four alternatives could have enough to sway any prospective buyers away from the Subaru.
