The Toyota RAV4 is a fuel-efficient used SUV under $35,000

When Edmunds rated some of the best used SUVs to buy, the 2018 Toyota RAV4 had many positives to report. The RAV4 has one of the segment’s biggest and most versatile cargo areas. Front-wheel drive was standard for this year, but all-wheel drive was available as an upgrade. It gets 23 mpg in the city, 30 on the highway, and 26 combined. That works out to about $145 a month in fuel.

Toyota’s Pre-Collision System helped apply the brakes in a scenario where a collision was possible. Dynamic Radar Cruise Control is what the automaker calls adaptive cruise control, which is helpful for the daily driver. Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist also worked well on the RAV4.

The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration gave the 2018 Toyota RAV4 a five-star safety rating. It received the Top Safety Pick award from the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety.

Honda’s CR-V is a fuel-efficient used SUV under $35,000

Small and fuel-efficient SUVs like the 2018 Honda CR-V can do it all. Another roomy cabin with plenty of cargo space, the CR-V also has a pretty long history of reliability. The inside is comfortable and quiet, equipped with plenty of USB ports and other creature comforts.

Fuel-economy numbers came in at 26 mpg in the city and 32 on the highway, which works out to about 28 combined. Edmunds estimates it would cost around $126 a month to fill the CR-V, far below the segment average of $197 a month.

Lane Keeping Assist and Auto High-Beam Headlights make driving easier. The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration gave the 2018 Honda CR-V a five-star safety rating. Experts at the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety gave the 2018 SUV its Top Safety Pick award.

Fuel-economy numbers came in at 23 mpg in the city and 29 on the highway, which works out to 25 mpg combined. Edmunds estimates it would cost around $128 a month in fuel for the Crosstrek. Compared to the average of $180, that’s not a bad deal.

Rear Cross-Traffic Alert and Blind-Spot Detection are some of the best safety features. Reverse Automatic Braking is also helpful in emergencies. The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration gave the 2018 Crosstrek a five-star safety rating, while the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety gave it high scores too.
