We get it. It’s hard to resist the 2021 Subaru Crosstrek. It’s not surprising that the Subaru Crosstrek is one of the most popular tiny SUVs you can buy. But the Crosstrek may have three drawbacks to consider. 

Is the 2021 Subaru Crosstrek worth buying?

Yes, the 2021 Subaru Crosstrek is an excellent pint-sized SUV to consider buying. It packs a highly capable option for off-roading in a conveniently sized package, making it a great daily driver and adventuring vehicle. 

You can get started in a new Crosstrek for about $22,245, making it very economical. It gained a slight facelift, a more powerful engine option, and more standard safety features. But let’s see what the critics are complaining about. 

The 2021 Crosstrek’s disappointing features 

According to Edmunds, the 2021 Subaru Crosstrek has a disappointing base engine. The 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine provides 152 hp and 145 lb-ft of torque. It can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in about 10.4 seconds. 

By upgrading to the 2.5-liter engine, you get 182 hp and 176 lb-ft of torque. It can reach 60 mph in about 8.2 seconds. This puts the Crosstrek on par with rivals. But the Subaru Crosstrek could still benefit from more responsive handling and less body roll. 

The second issue involves limited cargo space compared to rivals. Behind the seats, you can access 20.8 cubic feet of cargo space. With the seats folded flat, you can access up to 55.3 cubes total. The seats have a 40/60 split, but they don’t create a flat loading floor. 

Storage for small items is limited, so you might have to be creative when storing your personal items. But luckily, the Crosstrek has a high roof and large door openings to make installing child seats easy. 

The third drawback to consider is the Crosstrek’s drab interior. Car and Driver mention that the Subaru Crosstrek has a basic and durable feeling interior that prioritizes function over form. This doesn’t sound bad for a rugged option. 

As you move up in trim levels, attempts to jazz things up include faux carbon-fiber trim and orange accent stitching. But they fail to brighten up the overall atmosphere, which is called dull. The standard 6.5-inch touchscreen feels dated as well. 

What do critics like about the Crosstrek?

The 2021 Subaru Crosstrek has been noted for being comfortable. The 2.5-liter engine cuts down on engine noise, and the seats are fairly comfortable for longer rides. However, the seats can be a little firm and lack side bolstering. It absorbs large bumps well for a smooth ride. 

Plus, the Crosstrek is well equipped for off-roading. It has an 8.8-inch ground clearance. The Sport trim includes Snow/Dirt and Deep Snow/Mud settings with the standard all-wheel drive system. 

The Crosstrek is a Top Safety Pick + option from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). It scores well in crash tests. However, not many safety features come standard. You can opt for automated emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, and adaptive cruise control.
