5 Compelling Reasons to Drive the 2024 Lexus GX Luxury SUV
The new 2024 Lexus GX took massive strides forward when the previous generation retired. The second-generation GX lasted for 14 years, but that time has passed, and a new, more sophisticated version of the Lexus GX has emerged. This impressive luxury SUV came into the North American market in 2002 and has been a strong performer for many years. In fact, the 2022 GX accounted for 16% of the Lexus SUV sales.
Here are five things to admire about the 2024 Lexus GX:
1. A new platform for this Lexus SUV
Since the 2022 Toyota Tundra arrived, it seems that nearly every new generation truck or SUV from Lexus and Toyota share the same platform. This is the Toyota New Global Architecture-F (TNGA-F), which underpins the Toyota Sequoia, Toyota Land Cruiser, Toyota Tundra, and Lexus LX 600.
This platform is lighter and provides more body rigidity than the Lexus GX’s previous platform. The TNGA platform has a lower center of gravity, offers improved fuel mileage, and better on and off-road capabilities for the Toyota and Lexus vehicle lineups.
2. Striking new exterior design for the GX
Lexus turned away from the curvy and smooth lines of smaller SUVs in favor of a boxy, bold, and sharp exterior design for the 2024 GX. This gives the GX a bigger and more imposing presence with several benefits. Not the least of these benefits is the increased interior size, making for a more comfortable cabin.
Compared to the outgoing model, the new 2024 Lexus GX is:
- 2.75 inches longer
- 3.74 inches wider
- 1.3 inches taller
- 3.26-inch tread width increase
- 2.36-inch increase in wheelbase length
3. Gone is the V8 engine
The outgoing 2023 GX used a 4.6-liter V8 engine that produced 301 horsepower and 329 lb-ft of torque. A new 3.4-liter twin-turbocharged V6 engine replaces the V8 for the third-generation model. This new power plant delivers 349 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque, making this new model more powerful and capable.
Using this new engine, the 2024 Lexus GX boasts an 8,000-pound towing capacity, which is an increase from the 6,500 pounds for the previous model.
4. The GX’s ruggedness stays on the outside
Although the exterior is boxy, bold, and ready for the off-road trails, the interior is much more luxurious and comfortable. You’ll find a high level of comfort in the cabin, which is a welcome quality of this Lexus SUV whenever you take it out for a drive.
The GX features a driver-focused cockpit design with several high-end upholstery choices and impressive cabin features. The control center has physical buttons and knobs but also presents an impressive infotainment screen. Some GX interior features are:
- Heated and ventilated front seats
- Second-row captain’s chairs
- Semi-aniline or synthetic NuLuxe leather upholstery
- Optional 21-speaker Mark Levinson premium audio system
- Power liftgate
5. The 2024 Lexus GX is a better off-roader
Compared to the 2023 version, the new GX is a much better off-road Lexus SUV. The new rugged design and increased ground clearance translate to improved off-road angles for your time on the trails. These improved angles are:
2024 Lexus GX | 2023 Lexus GX | |
Approach Angle | 26 degrees | 21 degrees |
Breakover Angle | 23 degrees | 23 degrees |
Departure Angle | 23 degrees | 21 degrees |
The 2024 Lexus GX also comes with a standard full-time 4WD and a Torsen limited-slip differential, providing impressive off-road capabilities.
