Toyota is well-known for utilizing platforms for the Toyota and Lexus SUVs. For nearly every Lexus SUV you find, a Toyota model shares the same platform. This brings us to an interesting query; with recent changes, what is the Toyota equivalent, or alternative, to the Lexus GX?

Before 2023, the Toyota equivalent to the Lexus GX was the Sequoia

The 2023 Toyota Sequoia enters a brand new generation in which it becomes the largest Toyota SUV offered in the United States. The Land Cruiser is still part of foreign markets, but it’s not sold here.

The 2022 version of the Sequoia was the platform mate of the Lexus GX. Although these two SUVs shared basic underpinnings, the Sequoia used a 5.7-liter V8 engine that produced 381 horsepower, while the Lexus GX 460 was powered by a 4.6-liter V8 engine churning out 301 horsepower.

Another previous platform partner is the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado

Earlier models of the Lexus SUV shared a platform with the Land Cruiser Prado. The first generation of this Lexus SUV is the GX 470, which arrived in the 2002 model year. The Land Cruiser Prado contributed off-road capabilities to the Lexus SUV, giving it a full-time 4WD system with standard low-range gearing and a 4.7-liter V8 engine.

The GX received the 460 badge and a slightly smaller 4.6-liter V8 engine by the second generation.

In 2023, the Toyota equivalent of the Lexus GX is the 4Runner. With the Sequoia moving on and adopting much of the same qualities as the Toyota Tundra pickup, the only Toyota SUV using the same build as the GX is the 4Runner.

These Toyota SUVs bring hardcore, body-on-frame builds to make them great off-roading machines. Let’s compare some aspects of these two SUVs:
