You might notice something familiar about the new Ford F-150. That’s because it borrowed a groundbreaking feature that the Ram 1500 has provided for years. But does the 2024 Ford F-150 do it better?

What is the 2024 Ford F-150 Pro Access Tailgate?

The 2024 Ford F-150 Pro Access Tailgate is the latest multifunction tailgate to emerge on the truck scene. Tailgates with built-in steps, handlebars, rulers that swing open, and storage solutions have been in production for a while.

One glaring feature about the F-150 is the fact that it swings open, which is something we first saw on the Ram 1500 years ago. It opens to the side so you can get closer to the truck bed.

This helps make loading heavy or bulky items easier. It can also allow access to the truck bed while pulling a trailer.

However, the Ram 1500 Multifunction tailgate has a 60/40 split, and both sections swing out. The F-150 Pro Access Tailgate swings out with two equal sides of the bed that stay put. This may limit loading space because you don’t get access to the full length of the bed.

Both tailgate options are dampened and open flat like traditional tailgates. The Ram 1500 has an available step that emerges from the center of the bumper. The F-150 has a new step that folds out from under the bumper.

Also, both tailgates hold as much weight as the traditional tailgates can. Just because they have splits doesn’t make them weaker.

How much does the 2024 F-150 cost?

The 2024 Ford F-150 starts at $36,570, and the monstrous Ford F-150 Raptor R takes the price up to $111,550. These prices don’t include the $1,995 destination fee. The Ford F-150 Pro Access Tailgate is standard with the Platinum Plus trim.

The tailgate is available with the XLT and higher trim levels. So, it must not be an option for the entry-level XL model. Ford hasn’t released how much it costs to add the tailgate, but we won’t be surprised if it has a premium charge.

You can get started with a 2024 Ram 1500 for $37,920, and the lavish Limited model takes the price up to about $62,811. The destination fee is $1,995. The Multifunction tailgate is standard with the Limited trim.

It started as an available option for $995 and is available on each trim level. Pricing may have increased for the 2024 model year.

How much can the 2024 F-150 tow?

When properly equipped, the 2024 Ford F-150 can tow up to 13,500 lbs and can carry a payload of up to 2,455 lbs. Previous model years can tow up to 14,000 and can carry a payload of up to 3,315 lbs.

The 500 lb decrease in towing capacity and 860 is caused by Ford making the 36-gallon tank standard across the lineup.

With the 2024 Ram 1500, you can tow up to 12,750 lbs and carry a payload of up to 2,300 lbs. The 2024 F-150 doesn’t have as much of a lead as it used to.
