People often call the Toyota Tacoma one of the best pickup trucks on the market. While there are reasons it could be, in many ways it’s not. This less-than-stellar trend is present on the 2023 Toyota Tacoma, as it falls short of its competitors like the Chevrolet Colorado when it comes to performance and interior features. Luckily, the same isn’t true for the 2024 Toyota Tacoma, as it’s an improvement.

Here’s how the outgoing Tacoma comes up short and the new model fixes previous issues.

The 2023 Toyota Tacoma isn’t one of the best pickup trucks for performance

Perhaps one of the biggest ways the 2023 Toyota Tacoma isn’t among the best pickup trucks is performance. According to Edmunds, the base trim uses a 2.7-liter inline-four engine with a maximum output of 159 horsepower and a torque of 180 lb-ft. The problem comes when you compare this to other trucks. For example, the 2023 Chevrolet Colorado base trim makes 237 horsepower.

The great thing is that the 2024 Toyota Tacoma is a pretty decent upgrade over the outgoing model. The base trim uses a turbocharged 2.4-liter that makes 228 horsepower. This is still slightly lower than what the 2024 Chevrolet Colorado produces, but it helps makeup for the third-generation Tacoma being a bit underwhelming.

The 2024 Toyota Tacoma improves the truck’s interior

Another problem with the 2023 Toyota Tacoma is that its interior is more than a bit outdated. It uses a lot of hard plastics and has a mostly utilitarian layout. While it gets the job done, this isn’t what most people want from a modern truck. Unfortunately, even the higher trims have these problems, though they aren’t as apparent. The screen in the 2023 Toyota Tacoma is also underwhelming, as buyers get either a seven or eight-inch display.

The 2024 Toyota Tacoma is one of the best pickup trucks for its interior. Regarding interior technology, the truck comes standard with an eight-inch touchscreen. However, buyers can go with the 14-inch display. It also has wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay as standard. The new truck also has an overall better interior design, which helps it better compete with options like the Chevrolet Colorado.

Overall, the new truck is a much more well-rounded truck than the 2023 Toyota Tacoma. Not only is it more comfortable, but it delivers better performance. This is a truck that drivers can enjoy for years to come. Additionally, the Tacoma has always been a reliable option, and it starts at $32,995.
