Pickup trucks are a dominating force in America. Driving a pickup truck is nearly as American as baseball, NASCAR, and apple pie. In today’s market, trucks come in various sizes and capability levels and provide different functions for owners. Although consumers have more options than ever, the Detroit Big Three still dominate the pickup truck market, with the full-size models topping the sales charts.

Did all pickup truck models experience increased sales in 2023?

Some of the most popular trucks experienced sales declines during this past year. Some automakers can chalk this up to upgraded models, while others haven’t figured out why their trucks declined so much. The top-selling trucks with sales declines from 2022 to 2023 are:

Compact pickup trucks add more to the market?

The Ford Maverick and Hyundai Santa Cruz reported sales increases in 2023. The Santa Cruz showed only one percent growth, but the Maverick toppled 2022’s sales figures by 26.5% with 94,058 units sold. This sudden and immediate success has many automakers interested in adding compact trucks. The new Ram Rampage is en route, with the Toyota Stout not far behind.

Percentages might not tell the whole story

Nissan Titan sales rose 27.4% in 2023, and GMC Hummer EV sales rose 279.9% compared to 2022. You might think that would be enough to see thousands of these trucks on the road, but that’s not the case. These percentages translate to only 19,189 units of the Titan and 3,244 models of the Hummer EV sold last year.

Are electric trucks breaking into the top sellers?

Among the top fifteen truck models sold last year, the Rivian R1T hit the 15th position with 19,410 units sold. If the Ford F-150 Lightning was listed separately from the F-150, the Rivian wouldn’t make the list. Ford sold 24,165 units of the Lightning in 2023, an increase from 15,617 in 2022. These two EV pickups are paving the way for other electric trucks.

What are the five top-selling trucks from 2023?

The five names at the top of the list shouldn’t surprise anyone. One midsize pickup makes it into this group, giving us five names that have been at the top of this list for years. These five trucks are:

  • Toyota Tacoma – 234,768 Units
  • GMC Sierra – 295,737 Units
  • Ram Trucks – 444,926 Units
  • Chevrolet Silverado – 555,148 Units
  • Ford F-Series – 750,789 Units

The Ford F-Series is America’s best-selling truck 47 years in a row. Sales of this pickup line continue to increase, with a 14.8% increase in 2023 compared to 2022. The GMC Sierra saw sales improve by 22.4%, and the Chevrolet Silverado line increased by 6.1 percent in 2023.

Will the story remain the same with new trucks entering the market in 2024?
