The design of the 2023 Mazda CX-50 has potentially been leaked through alleged patent images. Motor1 first reported the findings and noted that the source of the patent images remains unknown. Though we cannot confirm the images are real, they look legitimate enough to make us believe so. The Mazda CX-50 is having its official new design released to the public next month at the Los Angeles Auto Show. The timetable for a leak like this one would also make perfect sense. It seems like every time a big announcement is coming up from an automaker, something about it leaks the month before.

What does the 2023 Mazda CX-50 redesign look like?

When production begins on Mazda’s latest SUV in January 2022, they will likely be building something that looks like these images. The front grille and overall front-end design are unmistakably that of a Mazda vehicle. We can see a detailed front bumper and uniquely shaped headlights. The entire front of the vehicle looks remarkably similar to the leaked camouflaged prototype from a spy video back in May. That’s one of the main reasons that, even without a known and trusted source, these images seem real.

Spy video similarities

The spy video from TFLnow on YouTube gives us a glimpse at the design of the CX-50 from earlier in the year. The front end of the vehicle clearly resembles the patent images. We can see in the video that it is likely an all-wheel drive vehicle, and could be hiding a new engine under the hood. The CX-50’s separation from the CX-5 and other Mazda models hints at a new platform and engine to go along with it. As the TFLnow hosts mention, 20-inch wheels may even be in the equation. A few different upgrades like these would be everything Mazda needs to get the CX-50 standing out on its own.

The bigger version of the CX-5 looks great for those who like the design but need more space. It’s no surprise that an automaker like Mazda would make a new entry into the SUV market. SUVs are massive in America, and making a more luxurious one is a great move. Competing against the likes of other brands, the CX-50 even looks to have potential off-road prowess and power.

Will the Mazda CX-50 replace the CX-5?

No, the CX-50 is joining the lineup of SUVs alongside the CX-5, according to Mazda. The two models will work together nicely giving Mazda different size offerings with similar features. The MX-30 is electric and other Mazda’s are gaining a hybrid version. With the direction the industry is moving, could the rest of the Mazda lineup soon become fully electric? This new CX-50 model could be hiding a hybrid engine underneath all its camouflage, or maybe even go fully electric in the next few years. For these reasons, we expect a decent price hike from the CX-5 to the CX-50.

The Mazda CX-50 SUV is bigger than the CX-5, but the design looks very similar. These new patent image leaks show us closeups of exactly what the front and rear of the vehicle look like. We will get a much better, less hand-drawn look at the Los Angeles Auto Show in November. That’s when Mazda will officially reveal its brand new SUV to the world, including all the fun details. We hope the TFLnow speculation is accurate and an off-road trim joins the lineup, similar to Subaru.
