This is one of the first major awards for the 2022 Volvo S60 Plug-In Hybrid sedan, and it’s well-won. Fighting against premium luxury EVs and cheap hybrids, the Volvo S60 Recharge (as it’s known) fits into a small but competitive segment of plug-ins. With a low starting price for a luxury car, the convenience of an optional battery-only driving mode, and fast recharging, the Volvo S60 PHEV is one of the best partial-electric cars of 2022.

It’s the S60’s first time winning this particular award, but its modern hybrid powertrain is newly updated for 2022. The Volvo S60 Recharge—as the plug-in hybrid is known—starts at $47,650, and a fully loaded model starts at $65,845.

Trim levels are standard for Volvo and include the S60 Recharge base model ($47,650), R-Design ($48,695), Inscription ($51,695), and Polestar Engineered ($65,845). U.S. News did not specify a specific trim level, so we can assume that any model within the 2022 S60 Recharge lineup meets the best luxury plug-in hybrid standard.

The Volvo S60 Recharge offers a combined 31 mpg and an estimated 74 MPGe. It can travel up to 40 miles on battery alone, which is enough for an average commute (as long as you’ve got a charging station at work). With electric and gas combined, the 2022 S60 Plug-In Hybrid provides a total range of about 510 miles.

The Volvo S60 Recharge offers one other advantage: it can recharge its battery on a 240V level-two charger in as little as five hours.

Does the 2022 Volvo S60 PHEV qualify for tax credits?

Yes! According to the U.S. Department of Energy, both the S60 PHEV and S60 Extended Range qualify for tax credits. The 2022 Volvo S60 PHEV is eligible for a $5,419 tax credit, and the 2022 Volvo S60 Extended Range plug-in hybrid-electric vehicle qualifies for a full tax credit of $7,500.

Comfortable interior options round out the S60 Hybrid sedan’s appeal

Volvo is known for its solid and upscale cabin options, and U.S. News claims that the S60’s interior materials are “among the best for the price point.” While the infotainment system requires a bit of a learning curve, the technology is overall easy to use. Standard features include a 10-speaker premium sound system, dual-zone auto climate control, and a panoramic moonroof.

Daily usability is a factor in determining the best hybrid cars for 2022. The new Volvo S60’s attention to detail makes it an exceptionally mild-mannered and comfortable sedan for daily driving.

“The best luxury plug-in hybrid that you can buy in 2022”

U.S. News enthusiastically affirmed that the 2022 S60 T8 plug-in was the best luxury PHEV you could get in 2022. Part of that may be the S60’s sub-$50,000 starting price, but USN went on to call it “a well-rounded luxury small car” because of its comfort, premium materials, overall quality, and good fuel economy.

The convenience of a quick fill-up at a nearby gas station is one of the reasons to buy a PHEV instead of an EV, and it makes the Volvo S60 Recharge an attractive option for drivers who aren’t ready to go full-electric.
