Large V8 engines have been on the verge of extinction for a long time in the automotive industry. Engineers have found that six-cylinder engines are able to produce just as much power. The Toyota Tundra was one of the last vehicles to still offer a V8 engine option.

The 2022 Toyota Tundra hybrid powertrain is an absolute game-changer. This is the first time any Tundra model is being offered as a hybrid. Toyota promises that it was very careful replacing the V8 and offers consumers two more powerful options.

The new Toyota Tundra comes standard with a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter i-FORCE engine that makes a massive 389 horsepower. The 2021 model year’s 5.7-liter V8 engine only made 381 horsepower.

According to AutoEvolution, the Toyota Tundra’s new hybrid i-FORCE MAX powertrain makes a whopping 437 horsepower thanks to added power from motors. This is the mightiest Tundra powertrain yet, and ironically it’s a hybrid despite the stigma about hybrids being underpowered. Who would have thought that Toyota could develop a powertrain even more powerful than its classic 5.7-liter V8?

The 2022 Toyota Tundra gets more than just a power boost

Power has always been paramount to the Tundra, but the 2022 Toyota Tundra hybrid powertrain option is just the beginning of its many upgrades. The Toyota Tundra got a complete refresh, and its redesign extends to all aspects of the full-size truck. The exterior looks more modern and includes a new front fascia and headlight design. Its body uses a fully boxed-steel frame design that ensures the Tundra is durable and long-lasting.

The new Toyota Tundra also boasts an improved fuel economy. Full-size trucks are notorious for having horrible fuel efficiency, and the Tundra was one of the worst repeat offenders. The 2021 Toyota Tundra got just 13 miles per gallon in the city and 17 miles per gallon on the highway. The new Tundra’s standard model gets 18 miles per gallon in the city and 23 miles per gallon on the highway. The hybrid model promises even better fuel efficiency.
