Gigantic 2022 Toyota Tundra Can’t Haul as Much Weight as Tiny Ford Ranger

The 2022 Toyota Tundra TRD Pro is certainly more of a performance model truck than one built for towing and hauling. Though most would expect a full-size truck to be able to handle more weight than a compact pickup truck like the Ranger

Toyota‘s full-size Tundra pickup truck is pretty big. Its new redesign brings to life many new features and little details the Tundra didn’t have before. After 15 years of the same generation, finally, a new-gen Toyota Tundra surfaces for 2022. This massive truck does not measure up to even the smallest trucks in some aspects, however. For instance, the gigantic 2022 Toyota Tundra TRD Pro can’t haul as much weight as the tiny Ford Ranger.

How much weight can the 2022 Toyota Tundra haul?

The Toyota Tundra TRD Pro is big, tough, and built for off-roading. It’s a sporty, rugged truck with extra graphics, features, and decent towing capacity. However, the Toyota Tundra’s payload capacity falls a bit short. The full-size truck has a max payload capacity of 1,455 pounds. The TRD Pro is certainly more of a performance model truck than one built for towing and hauling. Though most would expect a full-size truck to be able to handle more weight than a compact pickup truck like the Ranger.

Let’s not forget that the new 2022 Toyota Tundra TRD Pro comes exclusively with a hybrid drivetrain. The electric motor and battery make it one of the only full-size hybrid trucks meant for off-road driving. That’s part of the reason why 1,455 pounds is all the Tundra can muster. If you read that the 2022 Tundra TRD Pro can haul up to 1,940 pounds, that’s because it specifically says “up to”. This is something automakers tend to say because maximum payload includes passengers and any other weight on board. The amount of weight the Tundra can support in the truck is 1,455, according to Jalopnik.

Does the Ford Ranger have a larger payload capacity than the Toyota Tundra?

The newest model year Ford Ranger is able to support from 1,478 pounds up to 1,905 pounds, depending on the trim level. You’ll first notice the amount of weight the Ranger can support is higher than that of the Tundra. This is alarming for a few different reasons.

First and most obviously, it is a lot smaller. The Ranger is 211″ long by 78″ wide, and only 72″ high. The 2022 Tundra dimensions are unavailable, but we can assume it will be similar to the 2021’s 229-248″ long by 80″ wide, and 76-77″ high. The Tundra is a bit bigger in all directions as one would imagine but simply isn’t built to carry large loads. The Ranger, though a small truck, was designed to be able to carry as much weight as possible for a pickup of its size. The 2022 Toyota Tundra TRD Pro was not designed with that in mind, it’s a performance truck with off-road capabilities.

Performance trucks

This isn’t a shocking revelation that’s brand new with the Toyota Tundra. Other performance-based trucks for off-roading and most importantly, not hauling or towing, have similar stats. That’s not a bad thing, because trucks are no longer made just for hauling or towing heavy loads. Something more comparable to the Toyota Tundra TRD Pro would be the Ford F-150 Raptor. The Raptor’s maximum payload capacity is just 1,400 pounds. For a truck that looks much bigger and tougher than its Ford counterpart in the Ranger, that doesn’t seem like a lot. Though most people immediately judge a truck by its towing and payload capacity, that is no longer necessarily always a viable criticism. The Performance and off-road-focused trucks being manufactured today serve a different purpose.

The Ford Ranger is capable of carrying more weight than the 2022 Toyota Tundra. The total payload capacity for the Tundra is slightly higher than the Ranger, however. The Ford Ranger is also capable of hauling more weight than the Ford F-150 Raptor and a few other popular large trucks. That’s why the 2022 Toyota Tundra can’t haul as much weight as the tiny Ford Ranger.
