Fair warning, we have a pickle on our hands with the 2022 Rivian R1T. With as much attention that the Rivian R1T gets, we expected it to be a little more popular. However, it seems to be the most undesired electric truck.

The 2022 Rivian R1T isn’t the most desirable EV truck

The 2022 Rivian R1T is the first electric truck to enter production with groundbreaking features. It gets trash talk from Elon Musk, and we thought it could make the Ford F-150 Lightning a little nervous.

But this isn’t the case. According to a survey by Autolist, the Rivian is the least popular electric truck. Over 1,100 vehicle shoppers were surveyed in October and November to determine interest in the all-electric pickup truck segment.

The upcoming Ford F-150 Lightning is the most popular option according to the respondents with 38 percent.

The Chevy Silverado EV is the second most popular electric truck with 26% of interest. However, the Silverado electric truck isn’t even a thing yet.

Next up, we have the Tesla Cybertruck with a 20 percent score, and the GMC Hummer EV landed in fourth place with 11 percent interest.

Last but not least, the Rivian R1T received 5% of the popular vote. This is pretty surprising because we haven’t even seen the Silverado EV, General Motors is facing battery issues, and the Tesla Cybertruck keeps getting delayed.

Why is the 2022 R1T in last place?

One of the biggest concerns when it comes to purchasing an electric vehicle is cost. The 2022 Rivian R1T is a more expensive option with an MSRP of $67,500. But if you qualify for tax credits, you may get up to $7,500 off.

The 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning has an entry-level price of $39,974. That’s over $20,000 cheaper than the Rivian. But keep in mind that the Rivian is considered to be a luxury option instead of a practical work truck. The Tesla Cybertruck also starts at about $39,900.

The second biggest concern with EVs is range. With the Rivian, you get an EPA-estimated 314 miles of range on a single charge. With the larger battery pack, you can expect to reach 400 miles. The F-150 Lightning starts with a 230-mile range, and the extended battery offers 300 miles of range.

How much power does the Rivian R1T have?

The 2022 Rivian R1T is a little smaller than a full-size truck, but it’s bigger than a mid-size option. When properly equipped, it can tow up to 11,000 lbs and carry a payload of up to 1,760 lbs.

Official numbers for the F-150 Lightning haven’t been released. However, we do know that it has a targeted towing capacity of up to 10,000 lbs. While the R1T can tow more, the Lightning offers an onboard generator that can power work sites, campsites, and even your home. Although, the Rivian R1T still offers three 110-volt outlets in the bed and an air compressor.

The Rivian could be less popular due to its price and smaller size. But it shouldn’t be counted out. It still has tons of strength, power, comfort, and off-roading capabilities.
