We evaluated many different factors for our comparison between the 2022 Ford F-150 and the 2022 GMC Sierra 1500. This includes performance, efficiency, towing, payload, off-road capabilities, safety, interior features and technologies, and price/value.

F-150 vs. Sierra 1500: Performance and efficiency

The Ford F-150 outmuscles the GMC Sierra 1500. While both trucks offer a wide range of engine options, the F-150 boasts a higher maximum engine output, with a maximum horsepower of 450 hp and a maximum torque of 570 lb-ft. In comparison, the Sierra 1500 has a maximum horsepower of 420 hp and a maximum torque of 460 lb-ft. Furthermore, Ford may release a suped-up F-150 Raptor R model, which should boost the engine specs even higher.

For efficiency, the Ford F-150 has an estimated fuel economy of up to 25 city/26 highway mpg, while the Sierra 1500 has a gas mileage of up to 23 city/30 highway mpg. However, with the all-new Lightning model, the F-150 is the only one to offer an electric model. The F-150 Lightning has an estimated efficiency rating of 85 MPGe. 

F-150 vs. Sierra 1500: Towing and payload

On the towing front, the F-150 dominates the Sierra 1500. With the towing package, the F-150 has a maximum towing capacity of 14,000 pounds, compared to 13,200 pounds for the Sierra 1500. Do you have heavy items to haul in the pickup bed? The payload capacity of the F-150 ranges from 1,745 to 3,325 pounds. In comparison, the payload capacity of the Sierra 1500 ranges from 1,570 to 2,280 pounds.

F-150 vs. Sierra 1500: Off-road capabilities

The Sierra 1500 makes a compelling foray into the off-road truck segment with the all-new AT4X off-road model. However, it’s no match for the off-road prowess of the F-150 Raptor. With its powerful twin-turbo engine, beefy 37-inch tires, very high ground clearance, and large rear coil spring suspension, the F-150 Raptor can conquer all types of terrain.

F-150 vs. Sierra 1500: Safety

Both the F-150 and Sierra 1500 offer a wide range of safety-enhancing driving assistance features. This includes a blind spot monitoring system, adaptive cruise control, automatic high beams, and automatic emergency braking. However, unlike the Sierra 1500, the F-150 offers a reverse guidance system for backing up with a trailer. 

F-150 vs. Sierra 1500: Interior features and technologies

The F-150 and Sierra 1500 offer similar types of interior features and technologies. This includes an infotainment system, a digital cluster display, a wireless smartphone charger, a Wi-Fi hotspot, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration, and heated and ventilated front seats.

Ford has not yet released the price/cost information for the 2022 F-150, but it’s not expected to differ much from the 2021 F-150. The base 2021 F-150 XL trim has a starting price of $29,290, while the Raptor has a starting price of $64,145. In comparison, the base 2022 Sierra 1500 Pro trim has a starting price of $32,495, while the Denali Ultimate trim has a starting price of $80,395.

In nearly every area that we compared, the 2022 Ford F-150 dominates the 2022 GMC Sierra 1500. Whether its performance, towing, off-road capabilities, or safety, the F-150 comes out on top again and again. By many measures, the F-150 destroys the Sierra 1500.
