The Toyota Land Cruiser is a high-mileage champ, easily capable of racking up 200,000 miles or more. Look for one in your favorite online classifieds, and it’s not unusual to see them listed with that kind of mileage, still in good condition with plenty of life left. According to iSeeCars, the Toyota Land Cruiser has a long potential life span. But there is one Toyota SUV that has dethroned it.

In iSeeCars’ recent survey, the Toyota Sequoia bested the Land Cruiser. Not surprisingly, both vehicles share a lot in common. They are both large, three-row SUVs and share many of the same mechanical components. Yet the Sequoia managed to best its Land Cruiser sibling as the new high mileage champ.

How iSeeCars determines the longest-lasting SUV

iSeeCars collected data on over two million cars produced for at least 10 of the past 20 model years. It ranked the top 20 models based on their highest average mileage achieved. Each of the top 20 models had at least 2.5% of their vehicles exceed 200,000 miles, and the top 1% of these vehicles delivered between 230,000 and 297,000 miles.

The Toyota Sequoia is the new long-lasting champ

The top 1% of Toyota Land Cruisers racked up an average of 280,236 miles. That’s an impressive number which puts it at No. 2 on the list. However, the Toyota Sequoia went further with the top 1% reaching an average of 296,509 miles on the odometer.

It turns out three-row SUVs make up about half of iSeeCars’ list. This confirms the heavy use these vehicles get, both as commercial and family haulers that rack up more miles than any other vehicle category. It also highlights the popularity of these vehicles. In fact, the three-row SUV has become one of the most popular segments over the past 20 years.

This popularity explains why the Sequoia edged out the Land Cruiser in potential lifespan. While they both are very similar vehicles and share many parts, the Sequoia has a reputation for being more family-friendly.

As iSeeCars summarized it in their findings, “The Land Cruiser has a proven track record of durability, but its aging platform has been eclipsed by the modern and refined Sequoia, as reflected in the heavier use and higher mileage achieved by Toyota’s newer SUV,” said Brauer.

A vehicle’s lifespan is determined by two things. First, the quality of the vehicle plays an important role in its longevity. A well-built vehicle is more reliable, has fewer, less costly repairs, and has an appearance that holds up stands a better chance of outlasting other vehicles.

Equally important is how well the owners take care of the vehicle. Upkeep and regular maintenance are crucial to a vehicle’s longevity. A well-maintained vehicle, where the recommended service schedule is followed and that is regularly cleaned will last longer. This is true with any vehicle. In fact, a vehicle with lower quality and reliability scores will outlast one with higher scores if it’s better maintained.

Per Kelley Blue Book, the average vehicle on the road today is 12.2 years old and that number continues to increase. Cars and trucks have gotten more reliable and are better made, but Toyota still has a reputation for building some of the longest-lasting vehicles. Assuming a Toyota SUV is driven more than 15,000 miles a year and is the average age of 12.2 years old, it will have almost 200,000 miles on it.

According to iSeeCars, at 200,000 miles both the Toyota Land Cruiser and Toyota Sequoia have a lot of life left and are more than capable of hitting 300,000 miles with care and maintenance.
