MotorBiscuit has some surprising news about the Jeep Gladiator to share. Usually, Jeep isn’t thought of as having the best fuel economy because the Wrangler has a reputation for guzzling gas. But, surprise, the 2023 Jeep Gladiator is the truck with the best gas mileage in its class.

What is the gas mileage for a 2023 Jeep Gladiator?

With the 3.0-liter turbodiesel V6 engine, the 2023 Jeep Gladiator gets an EPA-estimated 22 mpg in the city and up to 28 mpg on the highway. Also, when equipped with the 3.6-liter V6 engine, the Gladiator gets an EPA-estimated 16 mpg in the city and up to 23 mpg on the highway.

It has the best fuel economy in the midsize truck segment. Plus, it ranks highly as one of the trucks with the best fuel economy overall.

The 2023 Ford Maverick Hybrid beats it, with an EPA-estimated 40 mpg in the city and up to 33 mpg on the highway. The GMC Sierra 1500 diesel also comes in hot with up to 24 mpg in the city and up to 30 mpg on the highway. The Maverick Hybrid dominates the compact truck segment and the Sierra 1500 diesel is the most fuel efficient full-size truck. But the Gladiator reigns supreme for fuel economy in the midsize class.

Honda models usually have an excellent reputation for saving fuel, and according to iSeeCars, the 2023 Ridgeline gets roughly 18 mpg in the city and up to 24 mpg on the highway.

The Chevy Colorado dropped its efficient diesel engine in 2022, and the Ford F-150 Hybrid struggles to achieve anything better than 24 mpg on the highway.

Which 2023 Gladiator engine is best?

The 2023 Jeep Gladiator has a standard 3.6-liter V6 engine with 285 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque. This engine has an advantage because it can be paired with the available six-speed manual transmission.

With the gas-powered engine, the Gladiator can tow up to 7,700 lbs, offering the best-in-class gas towing capacity. It can also carry a payload of up to 1,710 lbs.

The 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V6 engine cranks out 260 hp and 442 lb-ft of torque, which is helpful for towing and crawling over obstacles. The Gladiator diesel can tow up to 6,500 lbs and carry a payload of up to 1,710 lbs.

You can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in roughly 7.6 seconds. The EcoDiesel engine helps the Gladiator reach 60 mph in about 7.2 seconds.

The EcoDiesel engine may feel like the more refined choice. It isn’t as loud as the 3.6-liter engine and tows in an effortless manner with smooth transmission shifts.

It costs $4,650 to upgrade to the diesel engine, and it comes with a heavy-duty transmission. It’s available with every trim except for the base model and the Mojave. The diesel is the better choice in terms of fuel economy, despite being more expensive and unable to tow as much.

Will the 2024 Gladiator be redesigned?

It’s possible that the 2024 Jeep Gladiator will feature a mid-cycle refresh, like the 2024 Jeep Wrangler. If the Gladiator gets a facelift, the engine lineup could also be updated. It’s possible that the EcoDiesel engine will be dropped.

It has already been discontinued for the Ram 1500 and the Wrangler. If the diesel engine is discontinued in the Gladiator, it might be replaced by a hybrid setup. The Gladiator 4xe might get an EPA-estimated 49 MPGe and an all-eletric range of 24 mpg, like the Wrangler 4xe.

This would make the Gladiator even more fuel efficient, but the Wrangler 4xe can only tow up to 3,500 lbs, which won’t cut it for this beefy gas-saving truck.

So, you might want to scoop a diesel Gladiator up before it’s too late. Each Jeep will offer a hybrid variant by 2025, so if we don’t see the Gladiator 4xe in 2024, it will still be here soon.
