Many people park their cars inside a garage to keep them secure and out of the weather. Upon arriving home or departing, a simple button push automatically raises or lowers the garage door from the comfort and safety of your car. We agree the standard garage door opener is a worthwhile accessory, but what is a smart garage door opener system? And how is it different than the normal system?

How a normal garage door opener works

A normal garage door opener receives radio signals from the transmitter inside your car. The process remains secure since each button press sends a random code recognized only by its synced garage door opener. The garage door opener activates once it recognizes the transmitted signal.

What is a smart garage door opener?

A smart garage door opener connects to your home’s Wi-Fi. This feature makes controlling your garage door from anywhere with an internet connection possible. Not only can you operate a smart garage door opener like any other door opener, you can control it using Alexa, Google Home, or your smartphone.

Mighty Mule says there are two avenues to achieving a smart garage door opener. If you already have an automatic garage door opener, you’ll be interested in the add-on type. If you’re replacing your current system or installing a new one, a complete smart system from the ground up is probably best.

Pros and cons of a smart garage door controller

Best Overhead Door lists the following pros of having a smart garage door controller:

  • Convenience
  • Home security
  • Control from anywhere

The convenience of a smart garage door system comes from never worrying about the battery in your garage door remote. Simply keep your smartphone with you and charged, and you’ll always have control of your garage door.

A smart garage door system can also trigger home automation sequences. For example, closing the door as you leave for work can signal your robot vacuum cleaner to begin its chores. In addition, it can turn on other lights in your home, adjust the thermostat, and play your favorite tunes upon your arrival.

A smart garage controller enhances home security. You can set it to detect when you’re pulling into your driveway and open it independently, so you don’t have to wait outside if you’d like. Plus, you can ensure you or other household members have closed the door after leaving.

Controlling your garage door via your smartphone allows you to open or close it from anywhere with an internet connection. That’s a valuable feature for ensuring the garage door is closed before taking a plane to go on vacation. But it’s also a great way to let a delivery driver leave a package in your secured garage or allow a repair technician into your home while you’re away.

Compared to the list of pros, the list of cons is relatively short but includes the following:

  • Expense
  • Time and hassle of integration

Smart garage door systems are more expensive than traditional garage door openers, although evolving technology and popularity continually close the gap. If you’re not tech-savvy, the integration process is daunting. However, if you’ve connected your smart television to your Wi-Fi, you’ll be fine.
