If you’re looking for a Subaru hybrid in the 2024 model year lineup, you’re out of luck. Subaru ceased production of the hybrid Crosstrek as it closed out the 2023 model year. So, what’s on the horizon for Subaru? Will they produce a new hybrid? What about the automaker’s plans for the EV market? And what’s the 2024 Subaru Crosstrek like?

Subaru discontinues the Crosstrek Hybrid after 2023

Subaru, a small Japanese automaker, ceased production of the hybrid Crosstrek to redirect development costs. Nikkei Asia, an Asian news outlet, said the plug-in hybrid (PHV) Corsstrek’s low sales volume prompted Subaru’s decision. In the U.S., Subaru sold only 2,600 2023 PHV Crosstreks, accounting for less than one percent of U.S. sales.

Subaru has yet to announce plans for a 2024 hybrid model but look for new Subaru hybrids as soon as 2025. The automaker, in partnership with Toyota, is developing its hybrid and EV technology, intending to build a new EV factory in Gunma, Japan. For now, Subaru continues to focus on its gasoline-powered lineup and its single EV offering, the Subaru Solterra.
