There are many different types of cars in the world. Cool cars, fast cars, muscle cars, practical cars, hydrogen cars, and much more. There are also plenty of vehicles that some would describe as “weird.” Cars that do not seem to fit any single category, or perhaps try too hard to fit into more than one at a time.

We’ve all seen at least one car on the road that caused us to double-take because we couldn’t figure out exactly what we were looking at. One such expert on odd cars with unconventional appeal is Doug DeMuro. Doug has made hundreds of YouTube videos about unique cars’ “quirks and features,” but some cars are quirky in and of themselves. In his latest video, he talks about the weirdest cars that are for sale today, brand new. We wanted to highlight a few of them.

Hyundai Santa Cruz truck

The Hyundai Santa Cruz truck is a weird car according to Doug DeMuro

The Hyundai Santa Cruz is “a little pickup truck crossover thing.” as DeMuro describes it. The Santa Cruz is based on the Hyundai Tuscon crossover SUV but with a truck body for what we can only guess is utility. The highest trim of the Santa Cruz truck comes equipped with a three-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that makes “nearly 300 horsepower.” Despite those numbers, we are doubtful that this truck would be able to tow very much weight. Instead, the Santa Cruz looks like something Hyundai built for people who want to say they own a “truck” but don’t have a large enough garage for something more traditional.

Doug predicts that the Hyundai Santa Cruz truck will “flop.” He even compares it to the Subaru Baja and states that the Santa Cruz truck’s popularity will likely not exceed that of the Bajas. He goes on to say that the Santa Cruz truck will not make it past one generation. We are curious if there are just enough “weird truck” fans out there to prove Doug wrong.

Mazda MX-30 crossover

Technically the Mazda MX-30 is not out yet, but it will come to market soon, so that was enough for Doug to put this car on his list. The Mazda MX-30 will start its life as an all-electric vehicle, making it the first all-electric car that Mazda will ever produce. Later on, Mazda will offer a plug-in hybrid version of the MX-30 which will use a rotary engine as a generator to charge the battery.

The main reason why Doug considers the MX-30 to be a “weird” car is due to its shape. The MX-30 is a small crossover SUV but is styled like a coupe to appear to have two doors. However, there are two smaller doors on each side of the vehicle. Similar to what Mazda did with the RX-8, which is the last rotary-powered vehicle from the brand. Like the Santa Cruz truck, Doug believes that the Mazda MX-30 will be a “flop.”

We have only mentioned two cars in this article, but Doug calls out eleven cars that Anyone can buy brand new today. We agree that most of the cars on his list strike us as weird, but some others surprised us. That is the beauty of being a car enthusiast. Everyone has different opinions, but we all appreciate cars, even the weird ones.
