If you are shopping for a new car in 2022, you might be considering going electric for your next purchase. And that makes complete sense. New EVs offer efficiency, modern features, and often come with stylish design. Many manufacturers are now offering electric vehicles, including Volvo through its Polestar brand. Is it possible that this Swedish car brand can beat out the Tesla Model Y?

What is the 2022 XC40 Recharge?

The Volvo XC40 Recharge is an electric SUV. It competes with vehicles like the Tesla Model Y a40 Recharge is Volvo’s entry into the EV market. As an electric SUV, it offers quality materials, efficiency, and the quirks that the Volvo brand has become known for. The 2022 XC40 Recharge is based on the popular Volvo XC40, but now it boasts an electric powertrain.

The 2022 Volvo XC40 Recharge has a starting cost of around $50,000, which certainly is not cheap. But, it’s important to remember that Volvo is a luxury brand. So, it makes sense that this electric SUV comes with a steep price tag.

Should you buy a 2022 Volvo XC40 Recharge or Tesla Model Y?

Volvo has certainly been building cars longer than Tesla, but Tesla helped to pioneer the EV market. As other auto companies kept using combustion engines, Elon Musk and his team paved the way for the future of cars. That said, it is best to view Tesla as a tech company first, and an automotive manufacturer second.

According to Inside EVs, the Tesla Model Y may have more range and some better use of tech, but the Model Y does not feel as nice as the XC40 Recharge. Volvo has serious experience in building luxury SUVs, and that is reflected in the brand’s new EV.

Ultimately, the choice between Volvo and Tesla comes down to personal preference. The Model Y has better range, more driver assist features, and is larger than the 2022 XC40 Recharge. Plus, you gain access to Tesla’s charging infrastructure, which is fairly well established.

Which is cheaper?

The 2022 Volvo XC40 Recharge is cheaper than the Tesla Model Y. Because of this, you might find it more budget-friendly. But, as you climb the XC40 Recharge’s trim levels, it can quickly catch up in terms of price to its Tesla rival.

The Tesla Model Y refuses to rollover, and is one of the safest EVs on the market.

The price difference may be somewhat of a disappointment. Tesla owners have long complained about things like panel gaps and other quality control issues. That will likely not be an issue with a new Volvo.

Because the 2022 XC40 Recharge is a new EV, there will likely be some kinks to work out. The brand is certainly embracing electric vehicles and hybrid options. But when you build something new, even if it is on an old platform, issues can arise.

Should you buy a Volvo EV?

If you are interested in a new EV and you want something with luxury, a Volvo EV is a good choice. The 2022 Volvo XC40 Recharge is a usable electric SUV, even if it does not beat the Tesla Model Y in every category.
