On Monday, the NHTSA released information about Honda of America’s latest recall for defective fuel pumps.

According to campaign number 23V858000, Honda is recalling a whopping 20 make/model combos manufactured between 2017 and 2020. The fuel pump module inside the fuel tank may fail. Consequently, this would stop fuel from reaching the engine and could cause the engine to stall. Stalling while in motion could lead to some serious safety issues, including a crash.

Until repair, owners should look for warnings of an active defect, which may include illumination of the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL), intermittent loss of power, difficulty starting, or stalling of the vehicle.

The safety recall report states that the fuel pump impeller was improperly moulded. This production defect results in low-density impellers. Surface cracking occurs if the surface of a lower-density impeller is exposed to production solvent drying for longer periods of time. These cracks may lead to excessive fuel absorption, resulting in impeller deformation, interference with the fuel pump body, and, possibly, an inoperable fuel pump.

Honda has committed to replacing the fuel pumps on the Honda and Acura model list free of charge for owners. Honda dealerships will replace the fuel pumps. Owners will get notification letters after the new year, on February 5, 2024.

Honda’s recall numbers for this notice are KGC and KGD.
