The Toyota Tacoma is one of the most popular midsize trucks on the market. It might not be the newest pickup available, but that doesn’t stop folks from flocking to this vehicle. One thing that separates the Tacoma from the competition is its longevity. With proper care, this can be a 200,000-mile truck, with some achieving much more than that.

How long does the Toyota Tacoma last?

As a midsize truck, the Tacoma is known to achieve over 200,000 miles with proper care. If you want a long-lasting truck, it’s actually in the top three. And that shows the level of work that Toyota has put into its small pickup.

Almost 3% of Tacoma trucks on the road today have already racked up 200,000 miles on the odometer. And with proper care, it’s not really surprising to see one of these midsize trucks with over 300,000 miles on the clock.

Part of that might be because the Toyota Tacoma is so old. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, but Toyota is known for not trying to fix what isn’t broken. In 2023, the Tacoma still feels like an old-school truck. It’s got an optional naturally aspirated V6 engine, and you can even get it with a six-speed manual transmission.

The Tacoma is a long-lasting truck

According to Vehicle History, the Tacoma falls only behind the Tundra and the Honda Ridgeline in terms of longevity. Most owners have no problem getting up to 200,000 miles and above. Although, I do find it worth mentioning that some years of the Tacoma, like the 2010 model, are prone to rust.

The rust problems started in 2005, with Toyota actually facing a lawsuit over the problem. Still, mechanically speaking, these trucks seem to do just fine.

At the high end of the spectrum, some owners have done some unbelievable numbers with their Toyota trucks. In the video below, you can see Mike Neal’s 1.5 million-mile Toyota Tacoma. Getting that number probably takes more work than most people want to put into their pickup. But it is pretty cool to see, nonetheless.

Is Toyota redesigning the Tacoma?

For the 2024 model year, the Toyota Tacoma will be all-new. The brand has been slowly teasing what we should expect from this midsize truck. And so far, the news looks to be mostly good. The 2024 Tacoma will come with an optional manual transmission, get the twin-turbocharged V6 engine from the Tundra, and we will still have a TRD Pro model.

We also expect the new Tacoma to look beefier than the outgoing model. And that will help align it with the brand’s other new products, like the 2023 Tundra. Overall, it looks like most folks should be satisfied with the 2024 Toyota Tacoma.

It is certainly time for us to get an update. It’s been years since Toyota actually had a truly new midsize truck in its lineup. The biggest question will likely be how long the new Tacoma will last.
