If you thought the Lexus UX was small, you haven’t seen anything yet. On June 5, Lexus will unveil a new 2024 LBX subcompact crossover SUV. This tiny ute should be the gussied-up cousin of the Yaris Cross and slot below the UX in the Lexus SUV lineup.

How much smaller can the 2024 Lexus LBX be than the UX?

The measurements for the Toyota Yaris Cross show the tiny SUV to be 165 inches long, while the UX is 177 inches long. If the new LBX is the same size as the Yaris Cross, the answer is 12 inches. While one foot of space doesn’t seem like much, it can be enormous when working with some of the smallest vehicles in the market.

Is there still competition for the LBX?

Going smaller shouldn’t require much investment from Lexus, considering the Yaris Cross is already present. This new tiny Lexus SUV was rumored in May 2020, and now it’s a reality. The LBX should compete with the Audi Q2, but not for long. The smallest Audi SUV is being nixed after only one generation.

You might think the LBX should compete with the BMW X1 or Mercedes-Benz GLA, but these subcompact crossover SUVs are more similar in size to the UX than the new LBX.

What do the teaser images tell us?

The new Lexus LBX teaser images offer some detail regarding the style of this new subcompact crossover SUV. The headlights offer a slim design angled upward with the hood line, giving the front end some angry eyebrows. The small amount of the grille shown in the teaser provides a honeycomb pattern to stand out. We’re unsure if the traditional Lexus hourglass shape will still appear in the grille.

The rear teaser image isn’t as informative as the front-end photo. The rear image shows nothing more than the tiny luxury SUV silhouette and a red taillight LED line that runs across the entire vehicle width. This light provides a stunning element to the rear of the small Lexus SUV, but nothing more.

How much power will the 2024 Lexus LBX offer?

If this new Lexus SUV is nothing more than a tiny Toyota in a tuxedo, we should see the same powertrains in the LBX as in the Yaris Cross according to Automotive News Europe. This means a hybrid AWD model with a 1.5-liter 3-cylinder engine and electric motor to produce 114 horsepower. There’s also a non-hybrid FWD version that delivers 123 horsepower as an alternative. This engine can be mated to either a six-speed manual or CVT.

Will the LBX make it to America?

Lexus recently released teaser images of the new 2024 LBX on its European website, which indicates the tiny ute will be available in Europe, but probably not in America. The Toyota Yaris and Yaris Cross aren’t offered in the United States, and the same will likely be true of this new tiny Lexus SUV.

The new 2024 Lexus LBX could be extremely useful on tight European city streets where small vehicles continue to be some of the most widely used vehicles. We’ll know more about this super-small SUV when it takes the stage in Milan, Italy, on June 5.
