Iconic truck brand Ford has made America’s best-selling trucks for decades. Not just known for making everyday trucks, Ford also makes some pretty unique pickups. For the Ford truck super-fan, the brand also comes out with impressive, special edition trucks every few years. And to honor the kid in every truck-lover, Ford made its F-150 into a life-size Tonka truck that you can still find for sale today. If you’re willing to pay the price, that is.

Ford turns the F-150 into an adult-size Tonka truck

A few years back, Ford decided to dip into the market for nostalgia and build its own F-150 Tonka truck edition. Ford teamed up with Hasbro, the makers of Tonka, as well as Tuscany Motor Company, to create the limited-edition truck.

Though it was mostly produced and marketed throughout the 2013-2014 model years, according to FordF150.net, you can find a limited amount of Tonka-edition Ford variations through the 2016 model year. For its initial run, Ford planned to make 300 Tonka F-150s for 2013 and another 300 the following year.

As expected, the realization of a favorite childhood toy into a real-life truck was a success. According to CJ Pony Parts, “Tonka has been the best selling toy truck since 1947, and in turn, is probably responsible for sowing the seeds for many future truck enthusiasts.” Many people couldn’t wait to get their hands on a Ford Tonka truck.

The uniqueness of the special edition Ford Tonka and the price of driving your childhood

According to Tuscany Motor Company, a partner of Ford, the Tonka edition F-150 came in a custom, Tonka-yellow color from front to rear. But the Ford Tonka doesn’t match the color of a Tonka truck, as you’ll find the Tonka logo embroidered throughout the interior, on the front bumper, and on badges throughout the exterior.

It also performs the way you would expect a durable Tonka to perform, with a 5.0-liter, eight-cylinder, supercharged engine that puts out around 700 hp.

The F-150 Tonka edition also features a six-inch-higher lift, with coated bars to help you get into its monstrous interior. There are also Tonka-specific modifications to the hood, grille, doors, and wheels that help create this ultimate, life-size Tonka truck.

According to AutoTrader, you can still find a Tonka edition F-150, but you have to be willing to pay the price. In fact, there’s one for sale currently at a cool $110,000.

Going beyond aesthetics: Ford builds a real-life Tonka truck

The Ford brand wanted to create a truck that did more than looked like a Tonka truck, and at The Work Truck Show in 2015, the dream came to fruition. According to Contractor Magazine, Ford unveiled the design of a brand new Ford F-750 Tonka Edition at Indianapolis’ Work Truck Show set to debut for the 2016 model year.

The giant F-750, capable of hauling more than 17,000 lbs, was decked out to look identical to the Tonka trucks of your childhood. And like real Tonka trucks, this F-750 was a fully-working dump truck. And as Ford expected, the giant F-750 Tonka truck sparked a world of nostalgia for most truck fans.

ABC reported that the Tonka re-redesigns were a good move from Ford, since “a lot of Ford truck drivers started out driving Tonka trucks in sandboxes.”

Other cool Ford truck editions

According to Autobytel, the Tonka isn’t the only special edition Ford F-150 you can find on the roads today. In fact, just in recent years, Ford has created the Ford F-150 Harley Davidson Edition built with Harley-Davidson decals and an engine that puts out 340 hp, as well as the F-150 Foose Edition that boasted a custom interior linked to the legendary Foose designer. There’s also a NASCAR edition F-150 and SVT Lightning.
