A fellow student struck two Deer Park High School teens, Aimee and Javier, in the school’s parking lot, sending them to the hospital. Several witnesses say the driver was doing donuts in the lot just before the incident. He lost control and headed straight toward the couple.

Gibson Campbell, like many of the other students, was on a testing schedule, which helps explain why he and the others weren’t in class at 9:30 a.m. on April 15. He was standing in the parking lot when he noticed the driver driving erratically.

“It was just pure chaos,” he told KHOU. “[The driver] was doing donuts, and he was swinging around for his fifth one, and then floored it—right into them.”

Javier acted quickly and pushed Aimee out of the way of the speeding car. Aimee’s stepmother says that he took the majority of the damage, with her sustaining minor injuries.

Other students rushed to help the injured teens

Gibson said he and a handful of students rushed over to assess the situation.

“We saw [Javier] land on his head, and we all rushed over,” he explained.

Jacob Moore, a junior in attendance, says most students didn’t notice Aimee. Aimee, seeing her boyfriend on the ground and hurt, was seemingly hysterical.

“There were a bunch of people around them, at the time I didn’t know it, but the girl was also hit,” he said. “She was crying, and she was doing everything she could to help him. I just held his hand and talked to him, and he made a joke saying, ‘I don’t want to get blood on my shirt.'”

Doctors expect both students to make a full recovery

Javier took most of the impact, so doctors are keeping him for a few days to monitor for internal bleeding. Aimee, however, went home the same day.

Police charged the driver who struck them with two counts of reckless driving and aggravated assault. Aimee’s stepmother calls Javier a hero for protecting her.
