The 2020 Subaru lineup offered various safe cars, but there are also a few 2021 models worth noting. The 2021 Subaru Outback and the 2021 Subaru Crosstrek are both at the top of the list for safety and reliability. Which Subaru is right for your lifestyle?

The 2021 Subaru Crosstrek is a reliable choice

MotorTrend recently featured a list of reliable SUVs for the 2021 models. Topping that list was the 2021 Subaru Crosstrek for the best subcompact SUV. The funky-colored crossover SUV might not be for everyone, but it is a safe choice.

The Crosstrek lands anywhere from $23,295 for a base model up to just under $30,000 with some upgraded features. It comes in interesting colors like Plasma Yellow Pearl and Lagoon Blue Pearl, or the standard Subaru Horizon Blue Pearl.

The 2.0L flat-four engine gets 152 hp, while the 2.5L direct-injection flat-four gets 182 hp. It isn’t quite the speed-machine some might be interested in, but it gets the job done. It gets an estimated 25 to 30 miles combined miles per gallon.

As far as the towing capacity, the hybrid and non-hybrid options are different. For the hybrid, the capacity is 1,000 lb. The non-hybrid can tow up to 1,500 lb. It might not be sporty enough for every occasion, but the Crosstrek has many features that make it a solid choice.

The 2021 Subaru Outback has extra safety features

The Subaru Outback made it to the top of the list for the best midsize SUV. The 2021 model got a nice upgrade on the interior and offered plenty of room for adventures. The Java Brown Nappa Leather interior does offer a more adult look to the SUV.

In addition to that, this Subaru offers some state-of-the-art safety features. This includes EyeSight Driver Assist Technology, DriverFocus Distraction Mitigation System, and upgraded passenger safety airbags.

The 2.4L direct-injection turbo Subaru boxer engine got an estimated 260 hp. This one is capable of towing 3,500 pounds.

The regular 2.4 H4 was around 182 hp. Oh, and it gets 8.7 inches of ground clearance for whatever roads you find yourself on.

The price? $27,845 for the base and $40,995 for the upgraded version. This might make the Outback out of some price ranges, but we think it could be worth it for the safety features.

What is the difference between the 2020 and 2021 models?

The 2020 Subaru Outback got a hefty redesign back in 2020, so only minor upgrades were needed in 2021. However, many of these were upgraded safety features. This makes it a solid choice for a family car that you can enjoy on the weekends, too.

The Subaru Crosstrek got a sportier facelift in 2021. A fresh interior and new color schemes make a big difference in the styling. It is a funky but safe machine capable of whatever adventures you might think up.

Overall, Subaru deserved to make the list this year with both the Outback and Crosstrek. If reliable and sporty is your thing, these SUVs are an appropriate choice.
