Pro Power Onboard Helps This Hybrid Truck That’s Not a Maverick Win a New Award

Ford’s popular Maverick hybrid truck is getting all the attention in the truck world right now. The Maverick is, after all, a small truck that can get more than 40 miles per gallon because of its hybrid engine. But the Ford F-150 Hybrid is making its own waves. For 2022 the American Automobile Association, or AAA, has named the F-150 Hybrid its Car Guide winner of First Place Pickup.

For the 2022 Car Guide, AAA ranked vehicles that were new or significantly improved for 2021. That means the 14th generation of F-150 was considered. Every vehicle tested had to have at least one advanced driver-assistance system. In the F-150s case, it has several options, which include adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, lane keep assistance, and more.

Ford’s PowerBoost hybrid system is available with the 3.5-liter V6 engine and 10-speed automatic transmission. Depending on the trim level, the hybrid option adds $2,500 to $4,500 to the price of an F-150.

The F-150 Hybrid’s system is called PowerBoost. It not only helps the F-150 get better gas mileage, but it adds 47 horsepower to the truck. The Hybrid is the most-powerful F-150 you can order with 430 horsepower. While AAA liked the fuel economy, it said the transitions between electric and gasoline power “frequently were jarring.”

The F-150’s hybrid system gives a small gain of four miles-per-gallon, which doesn’t sound like a lot. But in an F-150, that’s a 20% increase.

What is Ford’s Pro Power OnBoard?

Many trucks come with 120-volt household outlets for powering tools or tailgating supplies.

Every Hybrid F-150 comes with the Pro Power Onboard system, which is a clever 2.4-kilowatt generator for running tools or tailgating supplies. F-150s with the system get two household outlets in the bed. A 7.2-kilowatt generator is optional. According to Ford,  2.4 kilowatts of juice is enough to run a circular saw, a miter saw a small air compressor, and a battery charger at once.

The 7.2-kilowatt PowerBoost system has four outlets in the bed and can run for 32 hours on a full tank of gas. It can run a 120-volt plasma cutter, a tig welder, a chop saw, a 1.4 horsepower air compressor, an angle grinder, and a work light, all at the same time.

Does the Hybrid beat the F-150 Lightning?

The Hybrid may be the most powerful gas-powered F-150, but the Lightning is much more powerful. The Lightning can be ordered as a 580-horsepower truck that is expected to hit 60 miles per hour in about 4 seconds. It’s so quick, Ford made it a NASCAR pace truck. The Hybrid’s Pro Power OnBoard has up to 7.2 kilowatts. For the job site the Lightning comes with 10-kilowatts of power from its 11 Pro Power Onboard outlets. The F-150 Lightning also has enough power to charge other electric vehicles, too.

The F-150 Lightning truck starts at about $39,974, while the PowerBoost Hybrid starts at $41,145, depending on trim levels. The Lightning’s basic truck is the Pro. The F-150 Lightning Platinum has a range of up to 300 miles with an extended battery pack.
