Michigan police officers borrow truck to save people in burning apartment
An apartment building in Scottbill, Michigan suddenly erupted in flames. Mason County Sheriff’s Deputies were the first emergency responders to arrive at the scene.
Police officers realized that people were trapped on the second floor as the fire raged out of control. Smoke and burning debris forced many residents out on their balconies, and they were trapped.
Everything was pretty chaotic as fire alarms stretched and people screamed for help. Thick plumes of smoke impacted visibility.
Instead of waiting for firefighters to arrive, Sergeant Adam Clave and Deputy Matt Moss sprang into action. They used a pickup truck as a platform to climb up and rescue the residents. According to Police Mag, the officers pulled multiple people and one small child to safety.
The child was passed over a railing into an officer’s arms. They also ripped off boards to help others climb down.
Multiple people were injured. Some people were treated by EMS at the scene and others were taken to the Cornwall hospital. No fatalities were reported, and that could be thanks to the fast-acting officers.
Multiple fire departments arrived on the scene to get the blaze under control. The units were from Scottville, Ludington, Pere Marquette Township, and Custer Township. Investigators believe the fire started on the first floor.
