The 2020 Chevrolet Suburban is a quality SUV with a nice interior, loads of technology and safety features, and powerful engine options. The Chevy Suburban is big enough for you to take the entire family where you want to go. You can transport your kid’s soccer team in this SUV.

But speaking of families, is the Chevy Suburban a good vehicle for those with small kids? Can you safely install car seats in the latest Chevy Suburban?

Child seat capabilities

The folks at Cars.com do Car Seat Checks each year for many vehicles on today’s market. How did the 2020 Chevy Suburban do?

The latest Suburban has as many as eight seats in three rows. Is there room for car seats? Absolutely. The tester model they used, a 2019 Suburban RST, seats up to seven; it had captain’s chairs in the second row while the third row was a bench seat.

How did it do? The team at Cars.com reported that when it comes to latches, there are two sets of lower anchors where the back and bottom cushions meet. They are silver so you’ll have little trouble finding them, and they are easy to use. Two top tether anchors are placed at the base of the back of the seat, clearly labeled.

Infant and rear-facing convertible seats were easily installed with plenty of room in the second row. In the third row, there are no latch anchors which made things tricky. The team installed the convertible forward-facing seat by using the seat belt and taking out the head restraint. The third row does have top tether anchors at the base of the back of the seat making installation and connection easy.

Room for improvement

Where did the Chevy Suburban struggle? They gave the forward-facing convertible seats a lower grade because the head restraint keeps the car seat from placing correctly. They made the connection by taking the top tether strap around the head restraint. There was less interference from the head restraint for the booster seats. But the floppy buckles on the seat belts, they pointed out, could make it hard for kids to buckle up by themselves.

The third row offers good access and removing the head restraint, the booster seat fit well, they said. There are also floppy buckles in the third row. The team at Cars.com did note that the middle seat’s buckle hangs from the ceiling in a way that blocks the driver’s view when you use it.

The 2020 Chevrolet Suburban

The new Chevy Suburban is a full-size SUV with athletic optional V8 engine options and an impressive towing capacity. There’s a package that allows you to equip the Suburban for off-roading. You can also get a more upscale version for comfort and convenience.

Its size makes parking and storage a challenge. Still, it handles well even though the ride can get bumpy on imperfect pavement.

Built using General Motors’ extended SUV platform, the Suburban is among the top of the class when it comes to cargo space. The third-row area is a little tighter than some of the competition. There’s also its predicted reliability rating that’s lower than some of its peers.

U.S. News made the 2020 Chevrolet Suburban a finalist for their 2020 Best Large SUV for Families award. They liked the winning combination of cargo and passenger space, reliability and safety ratings, and favorable reviews from industry experts. It has a lot of great features for families too.

There were minimal changes from the 2019 models. The Deepwood Green and Pepperdust metallic paint colors are no longer available. Otherwise, everything is the same. The 2020 model is the last of the current generation; the 2021 models will be all-new.
