Indiana police officer fires gun to stop truck driver from running him over

Things got out of control during a routine traffic stop in Kosciusko, Indiana as a truck driver went on a bit of a rampage. Indiana State Police are leading an ongoing investigation into the incident that ended in gunfire.

Around 3:33 AM, an officer with the Warsaw Police Department initiated a traffic stop. However, the truck driver refused to pull over. The driver, identified as 37-year-old Lance Walter, sped away from the scene, leading a police chase.

Police officers followed the truck until it slammed into a police SUV near the intersection of SR 13 and E CR 150 North. According to WANE, an officer was exiting the SUV during the collision.

Walter drove a short distance and turned around, accelerating to strike the SUV and officer again. This is when the officer fired his gun to try and stop the suspect. The bullet didn’t strike anyone but the SUV got rammed a second time.

Then Walter tried to run away on foot in a nearby field. He didn’t escape as a K-9 officer quickly found him. He was takeninto custody on preliminary charges of Resisting Law Enforcement with a Vehicle and Attempted Murder.

The police officer who was struck by his SUV was treated for a minor leg injury. No one else was injured. As the investigation continues, Indiana State Police are conducting interviews, reviewing in-car and body camera footage, and processing the scene.
