Since the Toyota Tundra and Toyota Sequoia share so much, we wondered when the new and improved Sequoia would come. Toyota’s full-size pickup truck has already received its updates; now it’s the Sequoia’s turn. It looks like an updated, next-gen Toyota Sequoia is on the way. The Japanese automaker released its first teaser image for the redesigned, three-row, full-size SUV. Here’s what we know about the next-generation 2023 Toyota Sequoia SUV.

According to MotorTrend, there may be a few stylistic references to early Sequoia models in the next-gen version. The second-generation model has been around since 2007, so an update is welcomed. Toyota gave us a glimpse into the rear-end of the vehicle, revealing a few things. Straight edges overtake the rounded body lines of previous models. Newly shaped “T” taillights closely resembling others in the Toyota SUV lineup are now present as well. The taillights sit further into the rear quarter panel and across the liftgate, giving them a more modern, dominant appearance.

Additionally, the teaser shows the C-pillar with a piece of black trim instead of a body-color one. The new Sequoia rear quarter window is closer to the back of the rear doors than ever before. Speaking of rear quarter windows, they’re a unique arrowhead shape with a gray, silver, or chrome piece of trim between it and the body of the SUV. Door handles also seem to have gotten the chrome treatment, which is commonplace with many models in the modern era.

A callback to a previous generation of the Toyota Sequoia

According to MotorTrend, the 2023 Toyota Sequoia pays tribute to the Sequoia models from 2001 to 2007. “Instead of being completely encased into the liftgate, the rear window now curves around the gate and into the body…”. MotorTrend used an enhanced exposure edit to discover this from the rear teaser images. It’s too difficult to tell how the rear glass separates to form the liftgate. The part going into the body could be a piece of trim and would follow the line seen in the rear spoiler and taillight, just as with the first-gen Sequoia.

From Toyota’s teaser images, we also get a glimpse at the wheel. Without a doubt, this is a high-end trim level featuring a more expensive wheel option. They look like a black-painted aluminum wheel with a machined face, which usually isn’t standard on the base model. These are likely standard on higher trim levels and could be an option in an appearance package for lower variants.

What else do we know about the 2023 Toyota Sequoia?

Unfortunately, Toyota did not reveal any other information about the new SUV. As far as engines, drivetrains, suspension, TRD versions, and date of availability, we remain in the dark. Many of the improvements likely are the same as the next-gen Toyota Tundra. We expect a lot from the official Sequoia announcement to compete with rivals in the segment. For example, models like the Chevy Tahoe, GMC Yukon, Ford Expedition, and multiple luxury models bring a lot to the table. There’s high demand for large SUVs, and a Toyota Sequoia TRD Pro and Capstone Edition could be just what the automaker needs. The formal next-gen 2023 Toyota Sequoia announcement from Toyota happens on January 25.
