Ford announced the S650 Mustang with a solitary range-topper: the 500-horsepower Dark Horse. However, the lineup hit the streets devoid of a Shelby badge. That is, until now. The new Shelby Super Snake on the S650 Mustang GT platform gets the supercharged treatment to produce Hellcat-killing horsepower figures.

The new 2024 Shelby Super Snake will be limited to just 250 builds and produce 830 horsepower on the S650 Ford Mustang platform

Shelby American unveiled the latest Shelby Super Snake at the Barrett-Jackson Palm Beach, Florida, event on the 18th of April. It’s the first Shelby-badged build on the still-young seventh-generation Ford Mustang (S650) platform. And as you might expect from Carroll Shelby’s namesake, it has plenty of horsepower on tap. Up to or over 830 horsepower, in fact.

The folks at Shelby American say the new Mustang build will also be available with 480 horsepower. As such, the lower-tier model will have the same power output as the S650 Mustang GT, save for the Mustang’s performance exhaust option and six extra ponies. However, adding the supercharger to the 5.0L V8 and feeding it 93-octane fuel will result in at least 830 horsepower. That’s more than any stock Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat. Frankly, it’s only 10 fewer than the first SRT Demon on its race fuel.

Of course, it’s not just a supercharger. The new Shelby Super Snakes gets cooling system upgrades, a Shelby-Borla exhaust system, a Shelby suspension system, brake upgrades, and a new exterior look to name a few of the many changes.

Moreover, Shelby American President Gary Patterson says the performance car has quite the history. “The roots of the Shelby Super Snake began with the race-bred Mark IV Ford GT, which won Le Mans in 1966,” Patterson said. “That car’s engine was the inspiration for the first Shelby Super Snake, a one-off experimental built for high-speed testing on the track. Over the years, the Shelby Super Snake has evolved but continued to keep its competition-edged’ personality.”

Still, don’t expect to see too many at your local Cars and Coffee. “It is such a contrast in styling from European marques yet has the performance capabilities to compete with them at half their price. With only 250 available in the US, it will be ultra-rare,” said Patterson.
