New Honda Accord and Fit to Be Revealed in Tokyo

The Tokyo Motor Show is just around the corner and Honda has released info it intends to reveal the new Fit and Accord. But since Honda doesn’t only build cars, there will be more than just cars on display.

This will be the world premiere of the CT125 a Super Cub series concept bike. Also premiering are two business-use bikes; the Benly e:, an electric scooter, and the Gyro e:, an electric three-wheeled scooter. Finally, Honda will premiere two dual-clutch transmissions for CRF1100L Africa.

An important car for Honda is the subcompact Fit, and Tokyo will be the premiere of the next generation. Honda says, “Without compromising the outstanding usability of the current Fit the all-new Fit will come to market as a vehicle which will ensure occupant comfort and make their lives even more enjoyable.”

The 2020 Fit will probably get the new 1.0-liter turbo engine with 125 hp. A hybrid Fit will also be available featuring a two-motor system which is more compact than the previous Fit’s system.

The all-new Fit will look like an evolution of the current model but the front will be radically different with large, round headlights.

Will the Fit Be Sold In US?

The question for US consumers is if Honda will still sell the Fit here. As of now Honda will neither confirm or deny the availability of this new Fit in the US. Sales have steadily decreased over the last few years, decreasing by 37% so far this year after a dip of 29% last year.

The Fit is made in Mexico, and speculation is that Honda wants to free up that plant for building the better-selling and more profitable HR-V crossover.

Also premiering in Japan is the all-new 2020 Accord, another important vehicle in the Honda lineup. It was premiered first in America, but this will be its debut in Japan. It will be available as a hybrid, one of the many new hybrid models Honda expects to be released over the next few years as Honda applies its hybrid system to most of its models by 2025.

Prices for the 2020 hybrid Accord will start at $26,400 that includes a variety of active safety features, push-button start, and dual-zone climate control. With the 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine combined with an electric motor the system makes 212 hp and 232 lb-ft of torque.

The battery pack has been moved from the trunk to below the rear seat, eliminating the loss of trunck capacity hybrid Accords faced in years past.

The Accord’s base engine is a 1.5-liter turbo-four with 192 hp hooked to a CVT transmission. A 252-hp, 2.0-liter four-cylinder is the premium gas-only engine. The hybrid produces 212 hp with 48 mph combined mileage.

2020 Freed: Japan Only

A refreshed Japan-only 2020 Honda Freed will also be featured. Freed is a three-row minivan based on the Fit platform.

Honda has been on a record-breaking sales streak since 2012. With vehicle sales at a bit over three-million in 2012, Honda has increased sales to 5.3 million in 2019. For motorcycles, Honda is estimated to sell over 20 million in 2019.
