Alfa Romero will follow its fellow Stellantis brands into the all-electric world with a new flagship SUV in 2027.

Alfa Romeo’s CEO Jean-Philippe Imparato said the new Alfa Romeo SUV will be the company’s flagship SUV.

Stellantis, which owns 14 brands including Chrysler, Ram, Maserati and Fiat, is working hard to electrify all of its vehicles. It’s not known if the new 2027 Alfa Romeo will be a Stelvio replacement, or something entirely new, but it’s said to be the company’s new flagship SUV.

Could the new and smaller 2023 Tonale hint at Alfa’s new styling?

During a factory tour, Imparato told reporters the new unnamed model will help build sales for the struggling company.

In February Alfa Romeo showed the world the2023 Tonale, a compact performance SUV. The Tonale aims to showcase what the next generation of Alfas will look like. It’s a PHEV with a small electric motor powered by two different all-wheel-drive powertrains, which include a 1.3-liter turbo four-cylinder with 272 hp pared to a 90 kW motor, or a 2-liter turbocharged four cylinder that makes 256 hp.

The Tonale features Alfa’s iconic grill, and the long-hood of a performance car. But, since the new big SUV will be electric, the new SUV’s dimensions won’t be defined by the constraints of a gasoline engine.

Fun fact: the Tonale is the first car to come with an NFT, or non-fungible token, certificate.

The Stelvio, however, is in a larger class.

Today’s flagship Stelvio faces stiff competition from BMW, Porsche

In the performance SUV world, the Stelvio competetes with the BMW X5 and Porsche Cayenne, on paper at least.

Alfa Romeo will have to not only take on the standard bearers of performance SUVs with driving dynamics and power, it will have to do that with reliability, too. According to Consumer Reports, Alfa Romeo’s Stelvio has an overall score of 51, which was brought up by its road test scores that praise its handling, but way down by its low predicted reliability score

The new Alfa Romeo SUV will have to work hard to catch X5, though. BMW X5 has rating of 90, which was also brought up by its road test score. It’s predicted reliability is much higher.

The Porsche is fairly even with the X5, according to Consumer Reports. But, the Cayenne has looked pretty much the same since it was introduced in the late 2000s. It has always been a satisfying SUV to drive, and reliable. Sure, it has had several facelifts and engine updates, but without a significant update soon, any new Alfa looks much more modern.

The Stelvio Estrema is the ultimate new Alfa Romeo SUV

The new 2023 Alfa Romeo Stelvio can be ordered in the everything package that is now called Estrema.

On the heels of announcing the new Tonale Alfa also launched the new Estrema mode of its Stelvio. To make the Estrema, the company started with the premium Veloce trim level then added the Quadrifoglio’s performance goodies. It’s an everything package.

The new Estrema Stelvio SUV can accelerate to 60 mph in 5.5 seconds, Alfa Romeo says. The Estreme only come in four colors, white, red, blue or black, but also has exclusive carbon fiber trim, black leather sport seats, and a 14-speaker Harman Kardon audio system. An Estrema Stelvio is $58,950.
