My Mobile Mechanic frequently posts helpful DIY content and explainer videos to interested viewers. He’s racked up tens of thousands of followers…and two million likes on TikTok. At some point in his career, the mechanic shifted from working at a facility to mobile car repair. He recently shared a scary phenomenon that anyone using a vehicle jack should watch…and take proper precautions from now on.

Car floor jacks can’t be trusted

The tech films a vehicle’s right front wheel well area supported by a hydraulic floor jack. These compact, hand-crank jacks are popular in many residential DIY garages. Suddenly, the jack rapidly compresses, lowering the car. “And that’s how quickly your life can change,” he warns.

“If I didn’t have that jack stand there, I’d have been dead.”

At this point, though, this mechanic knows his safety steps. He had already positioned a jack stand under the floor jack. Experienced mechanics do this to ensure the car remains fully supported in the event the floor jack somehow releases.

The tech recommends anyone working on the floor use jack stands, not just a floor stand. “Use multiple jack stands,” he advises, “Don’t rely on one jack stand…practice safety when you’re working on cars.”

Another mechanic shares his horror story

A West coast technician posted a heartbreaking case in California: “Had a guy die behind our shop in [LA] doing diy no one knew because you can’t scream for help with several tons of weight on your chest I’m terrified to lift off the ground and crawl under I’ll flip a rim over under and stand supports and everything at this point.”

Always, always keep safety in mind before crawling under a propped-up vehicle, folks.
